Justin Bieber rounds off MTV Europe awards lineup (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Canadian pop star Justin Bieber has been added to the line-up for the MTV Europe Music Awards in Belfast on Sunday, when he will join his girlfriend and host for the night, actress and singer Selena Gomez.

The music broadcaster said Bieber and DJ David Guetta were the final acts to be named for the prize ceremony that will also see Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Red Hot Chili Peppers perform on the night.

The surviving members of Queen are also expected on stage for a special performance and to receive the Global Icon award.

Billed as one of the biggest nights in music outside the United States, this year's event has secured a strong list of headliners.

Coldplay have just released their fifth studio album, "Mylo Xyloto," which has hit the top of the charts in Britain and looks set to repeat the feat in the United States when official figures are released.

Lady Gaga is one of the world's biggest and most provocative music stars, teenage sensations Gomez, 19, and Bieber, 17, should appeal to younger fans while Queen will be a draw for older members of the crowd at Belfast's Odyssey Arena.

Despite being held in Europe each year, the awards, most of which are decided by a public vote, tend to be dominated by U.S. artists.

Lady Gaga was the big winner in 2010 and also leads this year's nominations with six.

Boeing to build spacecrafts at shuttle hangar (AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Boeing will announce an agreement with Space Florida on Monday to lease the hangar that housed the space shuttles to build similar craft that will bring people and cargo to space.

The deal with the state's space agency will create 140 jobs in the next 18 months and 550 jobs by 2015 in an area that's lost jobs as the space shuttle program was retired earlier this year, according to Gov. Rick Scott's office and President Barack Obama's administration.

"Florida has five decades of leadership in the space industry, which makes our state the logical place for the next phase of space travel and exploration," Scott said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press. "Boeing's choice of Florida for its Commercial Crew program headquarters is evidence Florida has the world-class facilities and workforce expertise needed for aerospace companies to succeed."

Likewise, the Obama administration praised the agreement between the Chicago-based Boeing and Space Florida.

"The next era of space exploration won't wait, and so we can't wait for Congress to do its job and give our space program the funding it needs. That's why my administration will be pressing forward, in partnership with Space Florida and the private sector, to create jobs and make sure America continues to lead the world in exploration and discovery," Obama said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press.

The reusable space capsules will be able to bring up to seven people into space. Right now, the United States doesn't have a way to transport people or cargo to the International Space Station.

Since phasing out the space shuttle program earlier this year, NASA is relying entirely on Russia to get American and other astronauts to the space station.

Obama's administration is criticizing Congress for not approving his request for $40 million in economic assistance for the region and $850 million for the Commercial Crew project.

"Neither NASA nor the Space Coast can afford to stand still. We must be aggressive in pursuing this next generation of space exploration ? and the jobs and innovation that will accompany it," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in prepared remarks.

Scott, however, is criticizing the Obama administration for letting NASA's manned space program lapse.

"Our country is now completely dependent on Russia for travel to and from space. A private business would never let any part of its operations be dependent on someone else. Fortunately, the space transportation systems being developed by private companies like Boeing will rocket the United States back to forefront of the space industry and help reignite job growth," Scott said in his remarks.

(AP) ? Justin Bieber is in the holiday spirit: The singer says he's the first artist on the Universal Music roster to have part of his album sales benefit charity.

Partial sales from "Under the Mistletoe," his Christmas album that is out Nov. 1, will go to various charities, including Pencils of Promise and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"Universal never actually allowed money from the album to go to charity, so it's kind of a unique thing and I'm very happy and proud of what we've done," the 17-year-old said in an interview from Lima, Peru, on Monday.

Universal Music Group is the parent company to labels like Interscope Records and Island Def Jam Music Group, where Bieber is signed to. Universal is also the home to acts like Eminem, Rihanna, Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

Bieber said he isn't sure how much of the sales will go to charity, but thanks his team for helping him achieve his goal of wanting to help others during the holiday season.

"I tell them basically what I want and they kind of go and help me get it done," said Bieber, who will also donate money to various food banks.

"Under the Mistletoe" features collaborations with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, among others. He said he wanted to "work with people who had great experiences with Christmas albums."

"They were all great people and fun to be around," said the Canadian-born entertainer, who appears on a "super festive" version of Carey's classic song "All I Want for Christmas."

Chris Brown co-wrote and co-produced the song "Christmas Eve," which Bieber says "all the ladies will like." And there are also tunes featuring Usher and the country trio the Band Perry.

"They've been really successful and great in the country world, so I wanted to get them on my Christmas album and cross some barriers and try to get some different audience members to listen to my music," he said.

Bieber, who also raps on the Busta Rhymes-assisted "Drummer Boy," said he enjoys performing different styles of music.

"I guess I can be pretty versatile ? being able to do country music and put out a record of me rapping on the Internet," he said. "I just think that with the Internet, not a lot of artists can be taken seriously if they try to change lanes and so I made it kind of apparent at first that I love to do everything and people kind of take me seriously when I switch over, so I'm really lucky to be able to have that."

Veteran newsman John Miller joins CBS News (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? John Miller, a veteran of both government and television, is coming back to the small screen as a senior correspondent for CBS News.

Jeff Fager, Chairman of CBS News, and David Rhodes, President of CBS News, made the announcement on Monday, emphasizing that Miller will contribute in the mornings.

CBS' "The Early Show" lags behind its networks rivals, NBC's "The Today Show" and ABC's "Good Morning America," in the ratings.

Though the press release says Miller will have a "major role" in the mornings, it also notes that he will report for all CBS News shows, including "60 Minutes."

"This is very exciting news for us. John is a man of many talents and one of them is that he is an extraordinary reporter," Fager said in a statement. "It will be great to get him back on the air again, even better that he will be on CBS."

As Fager mentions, Miller has not been on the air for a few years thanks to his latest stint in government. He has worked in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence since 2005.

This jump back to reporting is but the latest instance in which Miller, who began working for a WNEW, a local new York station, back in 1973, has alternated between government and television.

He has also served as a correspondent for ABC News, co-hosted ABC's "20/20" and worked for the New York City Policy Commissioner.

Security heavy at private service for Steve Jobs (AP)

PALO ALTO, Calif. ? Security is heavy at Stanford University as some of Silicon Valley's elite gather for a private memorial for Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs.

It was unclear when the event started or how many were in attendance but reporters saw dozens of people walking from a church to another building. Soft music could be heard coming from there later.

Apple spokesman Todd Wilder tells reporters he's been there since 2 p.m. PDT. He says it's a private event and he can't release any details about it. Stanford has also declined comment.

Earlier, guards directed the handful of reporters to a parking lot several hundred yards away from Stanford's Memorial Church where the service was held.

Additional personnel behind steel barricades allowed only a smattering of vehicles to enter the area.

Jobs was the mastermind behind popular gadgets such as the iPhone and iPad. He died Oct. 5 at age 56 after struggling for years with pancreatic cancer.

Robert Downey Jr. Calls for Forgiveness of Mel Gibson

Robert Downey Jr. was honored at the American Cinematheque Awards last night, as numerous colleagues and friends made speeches in honor of the Oscar nominee and acknowledged the substance abuse-laden journey he took to arrive at the top of Hollywood.

But when it came time to take the stage himself, Downey shifted the focus to the man who introduced him: Mel Gibson.

Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson

"Mel and I have the same lawyer, same publicist and same shrink," Downey said of his Air America co-star. "I couldn’t get hired and he cast me. He said if I accepted responsibility – he called it hugging the cactus – long enough my life would take meaning and if he helped me I would help the next guy. But it was not reasonable to assume the next guy would be him.”

Speaking about Gibson - whose anti-Semitic and anti-Oksana Grigorieva tirades have been made very public over the recent years - The Avengers star added:

“Unless you are without sin, and if you are you are in the wrong f-ckin industry, you should forgive him and let him work."

Do you agree, readers? Should we forgive Mel Gibson?

Siri ported to an iPhone 4, old phone learns a new trick (Update: Better performance!)

Apple's iPhone 4 may not have the fancy dual core CPU of its successor, but thanks to the efforts of developer Steven Troughton-Smith and the folks at 9to5 Mac, it may soon have Siri. The port of the sultry voice assistant was accomplished by using the 4S Siri and Springboard files, and some serious elbow grease, no doubt. As you can see in the video below, it's far from perfect, but it can recognize spoken commands without issue. Currently, the hack is missing an iPhone 4 GPU driver that keeps things running buttery smooth on the elder phone, and Cupertino won't authenticate Siri's commands coming from it either. So, it isn't quite ready for primetime, but it should only be a matter of time before all you iPhone 4 owners can tell Siri what to do, too.

Update: And in the space of just a few hours, Mr. Troughton-Smith has already managed to improve performance of the app on the iPhone 4 significantly, although Apple's servers are still unreachable. Check out a newer YouTube video showing off some seriously smooth scrolling action after the break. [Thanks, Ramzi]

Siri gets lost internationally, promises to do better next year

Siri gets lost internationally, promises to do better next year
The iPhone 4S' Siri integration may be a potential game changer, but she's not quite the world traveler some of us would like her to be. In fact, it seems she's as lost outside of US borders as any unprepared tourist. Looking for a pub in London? Better find a traditional map. Need to know the time of day in Canada? Siri admits she has no idea, go buy a watch. Business search (via Yelp), directions, traffic data, and Wolfram Alpha search all appear to be US-only features for now. The automated assistant's international failings aren't too big of a surprise, however -- Apple's own Siri page outs the service as a beta, noting that some features may vary by area. Stuck with sub-par international support? Sit tight, it's coming: Apple's Siri FAQ states that additional language support (including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish), maps and local search content are set to go international in 2012.

Pirates release tanker, sailors seized off Nigeria (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Pirates released an oil tanker seized off the coast of Nigeria, an official said Friday, freeing the 20-member Eastern European crew unharmed after five days in captivity.

The pirates left the MT Cape Bird late Thursday night, allowing the crew to sail away to safety from the spot 90 nautical miles off the coast of Lagos where they were being held, said a spokeswoman for Columbia Shipmanagement GmbH of Hamburg, Germany.

The spokeswoman said she could not give any information on whether a ransom had been paid or if any of the ship's cargo of oil had been taken. She spoke on condition of anonymity demanded by company policy.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Navy could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

Pirates seized the vessel Saturday night, apparently targeting its cargo of either refined or unrefined crude oil. That's part of a growing trend to target oil shipments moving out of Nigeria in the region. Analysts say some of the targeted ships carry crude stolen from Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, where thefts run into the hundred of thousands of barrels of oil a day.

The hijacking is one of the latest in West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, which follows the continent's southward curve from Liberia to Gabon. Over the last eight months, piracy in the oil-rich region has escalated from low-level armed robberies to hijackings and cargo thefts.

In August, London-based Lloyd's Market Association, an umbrella group of insurers, listed Nigeria, neighboring Benin and nearby waters in the same risk category as Somalia, where two decades of war and anarchy have allowed piracy to flourish.

Motorola Xoom Family Edition packs Zoodles kid-friendly software

Android Central

Motorola might just be on to something here with the yet to be announced Motorola Xoom Family Edition. Aside from the notably different retail packaging, this Motorola Xoom found in a big box eleectronics shop has some slight modifications when it comes to software.

While it still has Honeycomb loaded onto it, it's also noted to have the Zoodles application loaded onto it. Zoodles offers a "kid mode" option that is reccomended for kids 8 and under but also offers access to games, videos all in a same environment seperate from other functions of your device. No telling when Motorola will announce this new version to the masses but it can't be that far off.

Question is, will it be priced more affordably for families as well? We hope so but if not -- you can always download the Zoodles application from the Android Market right now. It's available for free and you'll find the video for it past the break so that you get a better idea of what, exactly it does.

Michael Giltz: Movies: NYFF #3 -- Blame It On The Bossa Nova!

The New York Film Festival is in full swing. Three new films are documentaries of one sort or another, exploring the masterpiece of novelist W.G. Sebald, the uprising in Egypt and the music of legendary Brazilian composer and performer Antonio Carlos Jobim. None of them are wholly successful, but they should all appeal to people with a particular interest in the topics at hand.

PATIENCE (AFTER SEBALD) ** out of ****

Author W.G. Sebald was one of the most intriguing and original authors in the world when a heart attack while driving in 2001 ended his life at the age of 57. He was often cited as a likely winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and was that rare writer with a truly distinctive voice. Not since Milan Kundera had a writer appeared to create a radically new style of book. When his classic novel The Rings Of Saturn was published in 1995, it marked the third in a trilogy that included Vertigo and The Emigrants. Like the others, it's a curiously bracing and exciting mix of fiction, travelogue, history, memoir, and just about any other label you can imagine. When asked what category he wanted it filed under in the bookstores, Sebald said all of them.

He wasn't translated into English until 1996, but back in 1992 (when The Emigrants was coming out in German), British director Patrick Keiller was filming the movie London. Released in 1994, it's a remarkably similar affair to Sebald: part documentary; part fiction; part bracing combination of reality, memoir and imagination that's narrated beautifully by Paul Scofield. For years I tried to describe it to people and simply said in exasperation, "You just have to see it." Then I read The Rings Of Saturn and realized, my god, this is like the novelistic equivalent of London, a movie I considered sui generis. And the books came first! Now when I want to describe the movie, I say, it's sort of like the books of W.G. Sebald. And when I want to describe the books of W. G. Sebald, I say, it's sort of like the movie London. Since most people have read and seen neither, that doesn't really help but at least I don't fumble around anymore.

As you can imagine, Sebald has passionate fans. His novel The Rings Of Saturn is perhaps first among equals or at least the most relatively accessible. A contemporary classic, it tells of Sebald the narrator taking a walking tour in parts of England, always ready to dash off a mini-essay on the childhood of Joseph Conrad or the remarkably significant role of the silkworm in world history. Blurry photographs dot the text and if you think a description of a rambling estate and its odd story seems too good to be true, just go online and it will show that Sebald is essentially accurate in his entertaining historical diversions. It's moving, strange, weird, hypnotic and quite wonderful.

Patience (After Sebald) is a tribute to all that. It's not a film like London and it doesn't try to adapt the novel, which would seem as impossible as turning The Unbearable Lightness of Being into a movie (and yet, that film was a classic in its own right). Instead it's an awkward, murky hybrid. The film travels to some of the spots Sebald's book ventures to in its walking tour, but then immediately assures us that trying to trace that path is fruitless and frustrating. Voice-overs offer chunks of the book at random. Much of the time is spent talking to artists who love the book and venture tentatively but with deep respect to explain why. Their grappling with it is amusing and bizarre. The sanest person made a "lit-map," using GoogleEarth to pinpoint all the locations the book hits upon and including text from the novel itself in this art piece. Others are far, far more convoluted and confusing.

If you haven't read Sebald, I imagine you'd leave the film wondering exactly what the heck this Sebald guy had written. The film muddies the issue even though it spends most of its time trying to describe it, or rather explaining how difficult it is to describe it. I fear anyone not already a fan will have little patience indeed with the movie and those that do love Sebald won't exactly be enlightened. Best you read the book on your own.

TAHRIR: LIBERATION SQUARE **

Filmmaker Stefano Savona was on the scene for the Egyptian uprising very early on. He won the trust of people risking their lives (and the lives of their families and friends) to overthrow a brutal dictator and filmed throughout the entire remarkable series of triumphs, setbacks and ultimate victory. (Or rather, the signal victory of deposing Hosni Mubarak; establishing a vital democracy is a work in progress.)

It's an exciting prospect that the film ultimately doesn't fulfill. They're in the midst of many of the major moments, even getting on stage or near top officials for key speeches. But we know very little about the young people we're watching argue and debate and hold fast while events spiral out of control. At the end of the movie, they're almost as much a mystery as they were at the beginning. Also, the filmmaker clearly found a warm welcome among those pushing for a secular democracy. The splintering Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoots are shadowy presences that we gain no clear understanding of at any point.

Tahrir has a certain visceral jolt at times as we see the people reacting to events we saw transpire from afar on CNN. It's moving to see them risk so much with so little hope of success and actually succeed. But it definitely helps to be somewhat informed of what was going on at the time. Anyone who didn't follow it will leave the movie having only the vaguest idea of what they were protesting, what was happening from day to day and why it ended so well. In the movie, we get harried and confusing reports of attacks and events on the other side of the square. If you watched CNN, you might know about thugs paid by Mubarak's corrupt government to create havoc and foment violence. From the movie, it seems women are front and center throughout. From CNN and other news reports, you learn the ebb and flow of their treatment -- early on women were a vital presence; later they were harassed by some and told they had no business being there and why weren't they properly dressed?

So Tahrir has a genuine immediacy and clearly the filmmakers put themselves at risk with the people in the square to make this movie happen. It's passionate and gives a sense of what it must have been like to sit there and not quite know what was going on but be convinced you had to stand fast. For any sort of perspective or coherent story, however, you'll have to go elsewhere.

MUSIC ACCORDING TO TOM JOBIM ** 1/2

Here's an almost foolproof idea for a movie that's rather bungled in its execution. Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of the all-time great composers and a key figure behind bossa nova. His music has been covered by so many world-class artists in so many different settings that the director Nelson Pereira dos Santos said, why bother with lengthy biographical information and tributes by others? Let's just gather as many film and concert and video clips that we can of the best artists in the world singing Jobim's music and cut them together into one glorious film. Wonderful!

The movie gets off to a strong start, combining concert footage with scenes of life in Brazil to show the world Jobim came from. Soon we glimpse scenes of carnival and Black Orpheus, the movie that sent bossa nova into the stratosphere for many people around the world. Soon enough there was "The Girl from Ipanema" -- one of the most recorded songs of all time -- and the rest is history. We see artists like Gal Costa and Ella Fitzgerald and Elis Regina and Judy Garland and Dizzy Gillespie and Caetano Veloso and on and on and on all delivering his many classics with verve and style. We also hear bits of his symphonies and art song ventures, though the movie always returns to the songs that have become standards.

So what's the problem? First, almost no songs are heard in their entirety, or to be more exact we almost never get to hear one artist cover a song from beginning to end. (It does happen once or maybe twice but this is clearly the exception.) That works great for "The Girl From Ipanema." At the center of the film that song is turned into a mega-medley with a fast version dissolving into a slow version into a version sung in English into a jazz instrumental into a (happily brief) contemporary dance pop version) and on. That showcase deftly demonstrates what a popular song it is and how a standard can be adapted brilliantly into so many styles.

Unfortunately, to a lesser degree that's how every single song is treated. Judy Garland may be breaking your heart but you can be certain we'll cut away from her to another version. Great performance after performance is cut short so they can move onto another one. But a third of three great performances most assuredly does not add up to one great musical moment. All three are ultimately lessened. Music According to Jobim becomes 90 minutes of teasing.

By the end, the movie reaches for a grand finale by drawing from performances at all-star tribute concerts. Seeing a glittering array of stars on stage certainly makes clear how cherished Jobim had become by the end of his life. But group sing-alongs are rarely interesting musically so the movie climaxes with some of the least interesting clips. I may not be right, but I also think Stan Getz wasn't included; maybe no good film footage was available but that's a shame as well, though of course many other acts couldn't be fit in either.

A movie that let the songs breathe, that chose certain performances and let them play out would have been much, much more satisfying. It can't help but send filmgoers out to their local record stores to check out some of the marvelous music heard in the movie. But it should have been a satisfying musical experience in its own right. Jobim had a terrific collaboration with Frank Sinatra and he certainly made one of the best albums of his career (if not indeed the best) when they recorded 1967's Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim. The film includes only a section of this medley, but here's a clip giving you the entire performance. Now run out and buy some bossa nova.

Officials: Radical American imam killed in Yemen

Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical cleric linked to al-Qaida who led an organization labeled as one of the most serious threats to U.S. security, was killed by an airstrike in Yemen Friday, according to the country's defense ministry and U.S. officials.

"The terrorist ... has been killed along with some of his companions," the Yemen defense ministry said in a statement sent by text message to journalists, Reuters reported.

A Yemeni security official told Reuters that al-Awlaki, who is of Yemeni descent, was hit in a Friday morning air raid in the northern al-Jawf province that borders oil giant Saudi Arabia.

He said four others killed with him were suspected al-Qaida members.

NBC News reported that U.S. officials had confirmed that an unmanned American drone had launched the airstrike. A U.S. drone aircraft targeted but missed him in May.

Story: Plenty of al-Qaida targets remain after Osama bin Laden's death

U.S. Rep. Peter King, a Republican who is chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, hailed al-Awlaki's death as "a great success in our fight" against al-Qaida and its affiliates in a statement sent to NBC News.

"For the past several years, al-Awlaki has been more dangerous even than Osama bin Laden had been. The killing of al-Awlaki is a tremendous tribute to President Obama and the men and women of our intelligence community," he added.

'We must remain vigilant'
King, however, warned that "we must remain as vigilant as ever, knowing that there are more Islamic terrorists who will gladly step forward to backfill this dangerous killer."

Al-Awlaki was considered such a threat to the U.S. that the Obama administration took the unprecendented step of putting him, an American, on the U.S. military's and CIA's "kill or capture" target list.

U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News that the fact he was an American made him an even more insidious threat.

"As an American he knows how we think, how we react, and how to push all our buttons," one told NBC News.

However, some U.S. military officials were hesitant to confirm al-Awlaki's death, because they have no forces on the ground to positively identify the body, NBC reported. It was wrongly reported that al-Awlaki was killed in an airstrike in December 2009.

Al-Awlaki was implicated in the? so-called underwear bombing attempt on a U.S.-bound plane on Christmas Day in 2009.

He was one of the top officials at Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which was also thought to have been behind the plot to send printer cartridges packed with explosives to the U.S.

AQAP usually confirms the deaths of its members or affiliates on Internet posts a few days after the attack.

Propagandist
Al-Awlaki was not the leader of AQAP ? that role belonged to Nasser al-Wuhayshi ? but he ranked as its most gifted English-language propagandist.

He preached at mosques in northern Virginia and San Diego attended by three of the Sept. 11 hijackers in the 18 months before the attacks.

In 2010, U.S. officials designated him an individual who had committed or was likely to commit a terrorist act and froze his assets.

U.S. officials say he built a substantial following in the United States and other Western nations through English-language postings on the Internet.

One of the biggest concerns about al-Awlaki has been his success in attracting and inspiring disaffected young Muslims, some of them converts to Islam.

Story: Judge sets 2012 trial date in Fort Hood shooting case

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the U.S. Army psychiatrist who is charged with killing 12 people in a shooting spree at the Fort Hood military base in Texas in 2009, was an admirer and emailed the preacher. The extent to which al-Awlaki responded is unclear.

Yemen in turmoil
Yemen has been mired in turmoil as eight months of mass protests demanding an end to President Ali Abdullah Saleh's 33-year rule continue, with international powers fearing that the unrest has emboldened AQAP.

During the unrest, militants with suspected links to the group have seized towns in a southern coastal province near a strategic shipping lane.

One analyst said al-Awlaki's killing would be more of a boon to Saleh than a loss for AQAP.

"For AQAP, these franchises are usually resilient. There are other capable leaders in AQAP who can fill his shoes," said Theodore Karasik, security analyst for the Dubai-based INEGMA group. "It's a short step backwards which will likely result in more assertion in the future, for the revenge of his martyrdom."

NBC News, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
