Mutant Roadkill review - when Temple Run goes post-apocalyptic

Mutant Roadkill review - when Temple Run goes post-apocalyptic

Mutant Roadkill screeched into Google Play earlier this month as an unabashed homage to Temple Run with a few significant twists. Instead of being chased, you're the one chasing, and you're running over radioactive zombies in a gritty post-apocalyptic world.

Players mount up in a car and steer by tilting the device to the left or right in order to dodge debris littering the streets and nail shambling mutants. Some will be a bit more aggressive, and require players to scrape them off the side of their car by skimming walls, or rely on the odd power-up to clear the way. Players earn cash based on how long they survive without crashing, how many mutants they hit (earning bonus points for consecutive kills), and how many challenges they manage to complete. That coin can be used to buy new vehicles, improve power-ups, and purchase consumables. A premium currency can be bought through IAPs in order to access the particularly good stuff.

US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the statobsessed

As much as the US Census Bureau has worked to embrace the digital space, its sea of data has been largely locked away from developers not keen on doing much of the heavy lifting. As of late last week, however, there's now a public app programming interface (API) for quickly putting all of that knowledge to work. Both mobile and web apps can hook into either the complete 2010 census or the 2006-2010 American Community Survey, bringing in basic demographics as well as more complicated subjects such as commuting habits and education. The Bureau sees the API leading to not just a more informed public, but to smarter government as well -- imagine a state government that knows the income levels by county through a custom smartphone app. Budding statistics hounds can request a key for API use right away, but if you'd rather just see what public access will mean in practice, you can check out an app gallery at the second source link below.

New Hampshire Adopts New LLC Act | Arizona Limited Liability ...

By Richard Keyt, on July 30th, 2012

On June 18, 2012, the Governor of? New Hampshire signed into law New Hampshire?s entirely new limited liability company act.? The law is effective January 1, 2013, for LLCs formed in New Hampshire after December 31, 2012, and January 1, 2014, for New Hampshire LLCs formed before January 1, 2013.? The law is called the ?New Hampshire Revised Limited Liability Company Act.? See the current statute.

The primary author of the new act is attorney John Cunningham who has written two treatises on limited liability companies.? He and Vernon Proctor wrote Drafting Delaware LLC Agreements.? John is the author of the $674 Drafting Limited Liability Company Operating Agreements (3d ed. 2012).? I own, refer to and recommend both of these expensive legal how to books.

Read Johns? two newspaper articles on the new law called ?What New Hampshire?s new LLC Act means for business? and ?What will new LLC Act mean for businesses??? In the first article he crows ?The new act is arguably the best LLC act in the United States.?

I gave the new Act a quick over view and generally liked what I saw.? The Act imposes fiduciary duties on members and managers.? It also provides for default statutory provisions that apply to all NH LLCs unless they adopt an?Operating Agreement that provides otherwise.? The one provision I do not like is the charging order provision because it allows a creditor of a member to sell the member?s interest in the LLC.

Alleged theater shooter to appear in court for charges

Aurora massacre suspect James Holmes is expected to be formally charged with killing 12 people and wounding 58 others. NBC's Leanne Gregg reports.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

James Holmes was charged with murder Monday in the deaths of 12 people at a Batman movie premiere in Aurora, Colo.

Holmes was also formally charged with 116 counts of attempted murder, according to The Associated Press.

A former University of Colorado graduate student, Holmes is accused of carrying out the bloody attack on moviegoers at the midnight premiere of "A Dark Knight Rises" on July 20, and wiring his apartment with enough explosives to have leveled the building if they had detonated.

The trial could turn on questions of Holmes' state of mind, according to The Associated Press.

"I don't think it's too hard to predict the path of this proceeding," said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver told the AP. "This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity."

According to the law in Colorado, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if they cannot differentiate between right and wrong, the report said. However, "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions," the law stipulates, the AP said.

Holmes was enrolled in the University of Colorado Ph.D. neuroscience program but withdrew last month. Neighbors said withdrawal from the program would likely have triggered his eviction from the building, which is reserved for people affiliated with the school.

Investigators said Holmes had amassed weapons, ammunition and explosives over the course of several months.

He was arrested in the parking lot of the movie theater shortly after the shootings, and told officers his apartment contained explosives, police said. That information prompted evacuation of Holmes' apartment building and those surrounding it until law enforcement teams could disarm the jumble of wires and explosive devices set to detonate by trip wires.

In his initial court appearance, Holmes was dressed in red prison garb, and had his hair dyed bright red. He looked off into the distance or down at the table, at times knitting his brow in a quizical expression or as if he was trying to concentrate. He did not speak.

Romney supports Israel's right to defend itself

Romney in Jerusalem (Uriel Sinai/Getty Images)

JERUSALEM?Speaking against the backdrop of the historic Old City, Mitt Romney signaled he supports Israel's right to "defend itself" against its enemies and said "any and all measures" should be considered in the world's efforts to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

The Republican candidate said preventing a nuclear Iran should be America's "highest national security priority." And while he argued that diplomatic efforts should continue, Romney insisted that all options should be on the table in dealing with Iran, including a military strike.

"We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so," Romney said in an outdoor speech at Mishkenot Sha'anamim, a cultural center in Jerusalem. "In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel's right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you. "

Romney pushed back against criticism that those arguing in favor of leaving the military option open are "reckless and provocative and inviting war." "The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," Romney said.

He argued that the threat of military action would put more pressure on the ayatollahs in Iran, whom he accused of "testing our moral defenses."

"They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," Romney said. "My message to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: I will not look away, and neither will my country."

In a message sure to appeal to Jewish voters, with whom Republicans are aiming to make inroads ahead of November's election, Romney repeatedly emphasized the "shared values" and "shared interests" between the United States and Israel.

Romney avoided directly criticizing President Barack Obama but slipped in a dig at his Democratic rival, arguing that public differences between the U.S. and Israel only embolden Israel's enemies.

"We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel, voice their criticisms.? And we certainly should not join in that criticism," Romney said. "Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel's adversaries.

By history and by conviction, our two countries are bound together.?No individual, no nation, no world organization, will pry us apart. And as long as we stay together and stand together, there is no threat we cannot overcome and very little that we cannot achieve."

Romney is dining with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday night. On Monday, he'll headline a major fundraiser for his campaign among top Jewish supporters, many of whom were in the audience for Sunday's speech. Among those in attendance: Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who has contributed millions of dollars to a pro-Romney super PAC.

On Monday afternoon, Romney heads to Poland, the final stop on his weeklong overseas tour.

Medical rarity: Two double lung transplants in same family

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? Three months after receiving a double lung transplant in 2006, Sarah Ridder returned to Loyola University Medical Center to visit another double lung transplant patient -- her brother John.

Two lung transplants in one family is a rarity. The transplants were necessary because Sarah Ridder and John Grosvenor both had a progressive lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis, which causes scarring of the lungs that makes breathing increasingly difficult.

The siblings have an unusual form of pulmonary fibrosis that runs in families. They come from a family of 13 children, and two their brothers and two of their sisters have died of pulmonary fibrosis or its complications. John, who lives in Sheldon, Ill., and Sarah, who lives in Sauk Village, Ill., believe their father and paternal grandmother also may have died of pulmonary fibrosis. Without their lung transplants, John and Sarah almost certainly would have succumbed to the disease.

Both had their transplants at Loyola, and continue to receive follow-up care there. The Lung Transplantation Program at Loyola is the largest in Illinois and ranks among the nation's top four in patient volume, performing about 35 lung and heart-lung transplants each year.

"Loyola has great doctors and nurses," John said.

Doctors and nurses, in turn, said John and Sarah are inspiring. "Both have greatly impressed me with how they hold such a zest for life, with their careers, hobbies and families," said Dr. Daniel Dilling, an associate professor in Loyola's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Sarah and her husband ride off-road ATVs, drag race a 1980 Starfire Oldsmobile and are rebuilding a 1980 Kawasaki motorcycle. John owns a trucking business and is building a rail mud dragster.

When Sarah first experienced shortness of breath, she thought she was just out of shape. But a chest X-ray she received following a skiing accident revealed the scarring in her lungs. By the time she received her transplant, Sarah's lungs were at only 40 percent of normal capacity, and she needed supplemental oxygen 24 hours a day.

Sarah received her transplant on March 15, 2006. John's transplant occurred June 8 that same year. Sarah was in a coma for three weeks and nearly died when her heart stopped and she had to be resuscitated. John also went into a coma, and had organ rejection episodes and other serious complications. It took him two years to recover.

But today, their lungs are functioning well, and they both are in good health. "It is a miracle that two years post-transplant, we had our second son," said John's wife, Danielle.

Living with a lung transplant requires multiple medications and frequent check-ups. "We talk all the time," Sarah said, "We give each other tons of moral support and lectures as needed." John added, "When Sarah is sick, she has someone to call and talk to. When I'm sick, I have someone to call."

Both say their spouses played critical roles in their recovery. Danielle didn't leave John's side during his three months in the hospital, leaving their 5-year-old son with his grandmothers. "It was very hard for me to leave him, but things were so critical at the hospital," Danielle said. "We were living day to day."

While Sarah was in the hospital for three weeks, her husband, Kevin, would get their son off to school, work all day, then stay with Sarah at the hospital until 10 p.m. Kevin's mother, Donna Ridder, stayed with Sarah at the intensive care unit during the day. "Love is so great and rewarding for the other to survive this journey and share a very special gift," he said.

RolePlayGateway?

I go by Lottie, and for now that can be enough. I'm nineteen and work for a hospital as a nursing assistant. My dream is to write a novel, so I like to think of myself as being literate. I have been role playing since thirteen, so I know my way around. This is my second attempt to get back involved with Roleplaygateway. I enjoy the people I meet on here, so I hope this time I'll be here to stay. As any girl, I enjoy my romances, but I can assure you from experience no role play will last if it's built based solely on that. With that said, I enjoy many topics: Fantasy, drama, realistic, horror, etc. (and do prefer small group role plays).

I like role plays when I am able to act as multiple characters. This allows a small group, but a wide range of possibilities. Also, I am capable of putting out a good amount of writing in a post, and I enjoy role players who can do the same. I do not expect a novel, but a limited paragraph every post can become boring. Role plays are stories where the ending is never certain. What you put in effects everything.

Just as i am here to role play, I am here to meet people. OOC's can keep a role play going just as effectively as a good plot. If you communicate with your co-role players you are able to brain storm and make the experience better for everyone. What am I saying? SPEAK!!! I'm a nice person, I promise :D I wan't to know your ideas!!!

Now for mine

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney both have softened their positions on gun restrictions over the years. As they expressed shock and sorrow over the bloodshed at a Colorado movie theater, neither suggested that tougher gun control could make a difference, a notion that has faded from political debate.

Romney signed a ban on assault weapons as Massachusetts governor. But as the presumptive Republican nominee, he now bills himself as the candidate who will protect gun owners' rights.

Obama called for reinstating the federal ban on assault weapons during his 2008 presidential campaign. But since his election, he hasn't sought to get that done or pushed other gun control proposals, either.

Neither man is likely to raise gun control as a campaign issue ? beyond Romney's insistence that an Obama presidency is bad for gun owners. Both say they'll protect the Second Amendment right to bear arms. A look at the evolution of the candidates' positions and where they stand on guns:

OBAMA

1997-2004: As an Illinois state senator, Obama supports banning all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms, including a failed effort to limit handgun purchases to one per month.

2005: In the U.S. Senate, Obama votes against protecting firearms makers and dealers from lawsuits over misuse of their products by others. The bill is signed into law by President George W. Bush.

2008: During his first presidential campaign, Obama supports a return to the federal ban on assault weapons, which began during the Clinton administration and expired under Bush. He also endorses requiring background checks for buyers at gun shows. The National Rifle Association attacks him as an anti-gun zealot ? a stand the group continues to take today.

April 2008: Obama is criticized for elitism after sounding dismissive of gun owners in a talk to campaign donors. He said voters in struggling small towns in Middle America "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" to explain their frustrations.

September 2008: Obama seeks to reassure gun owners: "I believe in people's lawful right to bear arms. ... There are some common-sense gun safety laws that I believe in. But I am not going to take your guns away." Nonetheless, gun sales go up when Obama wins, apparently because of fear that new restrictions are imminent under his administration.

2009: As president, Obama signs a law allowing people to carry concealed weapons in the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and other national parks and wildlife refuges and another that lets people carry guns in their checked bags on Amtrak trains.

2010: The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence gives Obama a grade of "F'' for failing to push even the gun restrictions he supported while campaigning.

2011: Obama says the shooting that severely wounded then-Rep. Gabriel Giffords, D-Ariz., and killed six people should lead to "a new discussion of how we can keep America safe for all our people." He calls for "sound and effective steps" to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, including strengthening background checks on gun buyers. But he's short on specifics, and the Obama administration hasn't proposed any new gun initiatives since then.

March 2012: Obama calls the fatal shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida "a tragedy," saying Americans should do some soul-searching and "examine the laws" to figure out why it happened. He hasn't called for any legal changes in response to the case, which mostly brought attention to some states' "stand your ground" laws making it easier for a shooter to claim self-defense. Indeed, most gun regulations are imposed by states. The primary federal law is the Brady law requiring background checks on firearms purchasers.

July 20: Obama says he's heartbroken by the Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre and calls for Americans to unite in prayer for the victims: "If there's anything to take away from this tragedy it's the reminder that life is very fragile, our time here is limited and it is precious."

Asked whether the mass shooting should prompt a new review of gun laws, White House spokesman Jay Carney declines to comment beyond reiterating Obama's existing stance in support of "common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them."

___

ROMNEY

1994: In his unsuccessful challenge to liberal Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Romney sounds moderate on guns, supporting an assault weapons ban and insisting, "I don't line up with the NRA."

2002: Running for governor of Massachusetts, Romney says he supports and will protect the state's "tough gun laws." The NRA gives his Democratic opponent a higher rating on gun-rights issues and makes no endorsement in the race.

2003: As governor, Romney upsets gun owners by signing a law that quadruples the state's gun-licensing fee ? from $25 to $100 ? as part of a widespread effort to eliminate the budget deficit.

2004: Romney signs a Massachusetts ban on assault weapons. He mollifies many gun rights advocates by coupling it with looser rules on gun licenses and an extension of the duration of licenses, reducing the effect of the earlier fee increase.

2005: Declares May 7 as "Right to Bear Arms Day" in Massachusetts.

2006: As he prepares for his first presidential run, Romney becomes a lifetime NRA member.

2007: While campaigning, Romney declares he sometimes hunts "small varmints" ? a comment ridiculed by some as an awkward attempt to pander to pro-gun voters.

2008: In a Republican primary debate, Romney says he would have signed the federal assault weapons ban if it came to his desk as president, but he opposes any new gun legislation.

2011: Making his second presidential bid, Romney's campaigns on a promise to protect and promote the Second Amendment.

2012: Romney tells gun owners that Obama wants to erode their rights. "We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners," Romney told the National Rifle Association's annual convention. "President Obama has not. I will."

July 20: Like Obama, Romney avoids talking politics on the day of the Aurora shooting. He says Americans are coming together in their sorrow: "There is something we can do. We can offer comfort to someone near us who is suffering or heavy laden, and we can mourn with those who mourn in Colorado."

What SAT Prep Should You Do To Beat The Test?

SAT prep is becoming more important than ever. Colleges use these test scores to determine whom to welcome into the school each year. These scores determine who will get scholarships and who will not. In many ways, if you fail to do well on test tests, you may find limitations on what you can learn and what you can do with the rest of your life. For that reason, it is incredibly important to consider tips and guides to enable you to do the very best you can.

Top Tips for Preparing

To prepare for these big college entrance tests, you will need to know where you are currently. It is a good idea to review all elements of the tests so that you are fully prepared. Just because you get good grades in math, for example, does not mean you should avoid studying it. Rather, learn where your strengths are and put more time into your areas of weakness, while still adhering to a rounded schedule of preparation.

The following tips can help anyone with SAT prep. Many people commit to studying in the weeks, if not months, leading up to the testing to ensure that they get the best possible results.

- Do consider formal tutoring help. Some facilities offer specialized help for these college tests that can help you to prepare and do well on them.

- Do take a few practice tests. These not only provide you with help in making the right decisions about what to study, but they also help you to get used to the format and the length of the testing periods.

- Read and read as much as you can in the weeks and months leading up to the testing. The best way to do well on the vocabulary portion of these exams is to be a strong reader.

- Get some help from teachers, too. If you are struggling with a specific area of math or science, for example, ask your current teachers for clarification on the subject matter.

- Engage others in helping you to prepare. Talk to parents, siblings and others who may have taken the test at some point in the past, and ask for help preparing for it.

Overall, SAT prep needs to be something you commit to because it will take time. This is not a quiz where you can memorize the answers to specific questions and do well. You will need to put the time and energy into learning how to assess the material that is included. That is why it helps to have a professional tutor to offer help and guidance whenever it is possible to do so. The boost you need to achieve big things could start here.

Should You Drink Sports Drinks to Refuel? | Dual Fit

The 2012 Olympics will soon be underway, and this will lead to an increase in advertisements for sports drinks, sports wear, energy gels and protein bars. While Powerade may be the official sports drink of the Olympic games, this does not mean that you have to follow suit. Sports drinks are widely sold in grocery stores, health centers and on the high street, but are they all they make out to be?

Many Olympians will be paid to promote energy foods and drinks, but this doesn?t mean that pro athletes and sports nutritionists are hooked on the supposed benefits of such products. Nutrition expert David Katz claims that sports drinks are similar to soda, but the marketing is done in such a way to make the consumer believe it could turn him or her into an athlete. Many people forget that sugar is the prime ingredient in many of these sports drinks, and sugar is loaded with calories and is very addictive.

WHAT DO MANUFACTURERS AND EXPERTS SAY ABOUT SPORTS DRINKS?

Sports drinks like Gatorade claim to rehydrate the body faster by providing essential electrolytes?small chemicals that help the body function efficiently. Potassium and sodium are lost through perspiration, and sports drinks claim to replenish these levels. Sodium (or salt) is an essential electrolyte, as it transfers electrical signals to the muscles and brain. Dehydration?hypernatremia? can lead to muscle weakness, but drinking too much water?hyponatremia?is associated with thyroid problems and brain disease.

As the body perspires during exercise, this liquid must be replaced, but the loss of electrolytes can cause general weakness. This is where sports drinks like Gatorade claim to help. Leslie Bonci, a consultant for Gatorade boasts that the body can absorb Gatorade more quickly than water alone. The sugar in Gatorade provides the needed calories that are absent in water. What sports drink manufacturers fail to mention, however, is that electrolytes are found naturally in milk, grains, vegetables, fruits and coconut water. Other experts state that the sugar content may create havoc in the body, as the higher a food on the glycemic index, the quicker the body can fatigue through the sugar slump.

DO SPORTS DRINKS REPLENISH THE BODY POST WORKOUT?

Manufacturers of sports drinks not only encourage consumers to drink during exercise, but prior to and post exercise. The sugar is not beneficial to teeth, and if these sugar starches are not burnt off, they could settle on the body and cause unwanted weight gain.

A popular brand, GU Energy, claims that one of their gel packs provides sufficient energy before a workout, but the consumer should also suck on an energy pack every 45 to 60 minutes into the workout. At 100 calories per pack, the body will be consuming more calories than it burns off. The manufacturer then recommends additional products to use post workout.

THE DOWNSIDE TO USING SPORTS DRINKS

Manufacturers do not care if the consumer if under or overweight. Their only motivation is to sell the product, and they will hire experts with knowledge of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to sell a product. The focus of this type of marketing is to make the consumer want something, and it is effective worldwide.

With nutritional experts claiming that obesity is on the rise, even children are now drinking sugary sports drinks and sodas at break time, which can cause weight gain and hyperactivity.

Manufacturers are unlikely to claim that their product causes weight gain more than its original claim that the product fuels the body, but the use of celebrities to endorse the product encourages the consumer to buy it. Gary Fisher, mountain biking legend, claims that these ?engineered nutrition? products can encourage more weight gain than muscle mass. The athlete puts in the hard work, but struggles to lose the gut. Gary prefers to consume a healthy meal prior to a workout, and then snacks on bananas throughout his bike ride. Afterward, he eats a healthy serving of chicken or fish with salad.

Ultra marathoner, Scott Jurek, drinks smoothies before his 30-mile training workouts, eats hummus wraps and rice balls while traveling, and consumes beans, quinoa, tempe, and brown rice afterward.

Energy gels are versatile and replenish the body quickly, but they can could cause overheating and further dehydrate the body. The South African sports nutritionist, Timothy Noakes, mentions that water is effective enough to treat dehydration, and sports drink companies publicize the fact that their products fuel the body better than water.

5 NATURAL WAYS TO ENERGIZE AND HYDRATE THE BODY

  • Fruits and vegetables: Many consumers forget that fruits and vegetables contain water. Even bananas contain 80 percent water. Eating an apple prior to a workout provides natural sugars and prevents the common sugar slump caused by processed foods and drinks.
  • Black coffee: Many sports drinks and gels contain caffeine, as it is a useful weight loss aid. Caffeine is a potent antioxidant, important to help the body recover, whilst also supporting overall immune health. Coffee also encourages the release of free fatty acids, which can be oxidized during a workout. Drink black coffee on an empty stomach, but only in moderation. The stimulation to the central nervous system increases the body?s metabolism. However, experts recommend that you avoid the consumption of caffeine with carbohydrates, as the increased insulin production can interfere with its fat burning effects.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Buy the unsalted varieties of nuts and seeds. A handful before a workout supplies the body with protein and energy. They are also useful to eat post workout.
  • Coconut water: It tastes delicious, is nutritionally dense, and it contains electrolytes to replenish the body prior to, during, and post workout.
  • Fiber rich/protein rich foods: Try whole wheat bread, protein bars made with dried fruit and pecan nuts prior to a workout, and consume fish, poultry and other lean meats after a workout.

IN SUMMARY

Sports drinks may be popular, but experts believe they can cause more harm than good. They recommend that the body would benefit better from natural foods and drinks, including coconut water, fruits and vegetables, and black coffee before a workout.

Following the Ice: Is this global warming? (continued)

NOTE: Just after finishing this and while brushing my teeth outside my tent, I almost ran into a couple of musk ox or rather, they almost ran into me. I was watching another musk ox grazing across the river half a mile away when I heard something, looked down and saw two more walking towards me. I was on a rock just above them and as soon as they saw me they charged straight up the hill, almost right at me. I jumped up and ran backwards out of their way as they ran right past me and up the hill overlooking our camp. There, they stopped and looked back to figure out what I was.

A musk ox trying to look like a lion. This guy and his friend stared us down for a good ten minutes before running away.

I d read that musk ox always like to get to higher ground when they feel threatened but I guess I m still surprised at how serious they are about it. I ran to get the rest of the team and together we took some pictures of them running through our camp. What an exciting end to the day! It s moments like these that make working in Greenland worth it.

My hope is that the stories in this post and the previous speak to a wider audience about climate change, glaciers, and field science. I realize that I could ve done a better job with citations throughout this post but hopefully you ll forgive me as I m writing all this in a tent in Greenland and don t have access to journal articles I would normally have if I had Internet. I ve listed a few papers at the end of each that you can check out. For anyone who s interested, I d encourage you to look at the websites listed at the end of this post. I think the Wikipedia pages on global warming and climate change are great places learn the basics of climate change.

Thanks for reading! I?ll be home in a month!

A Breakthrough: A Glacier Moves When Our Probe Says So

?What do you have on July 16??

A musk ox trying not to look like a big chicken. This is what they do when they feel spooked run uphill, in this case toward the photographer.

If this were a movie, the music would be tense and building; this was the moment of truth. It was late in the evening and Andrew Tedstone, a graduate student at Edinburgh University, and I were huddled over our laptops, the orange glow of the mess tent in the low sun were lighting our faces. Chocolate bars and mugs of steaming hot powdered milk were spread out on the big metal box that serves as our dining table.

Andrew s lab group specializes in deploying extremely accurate global positioning systems (GPS) on glaciers and the Greenland Ice Sheet (see Bartholomew et al., 2010). Amazingly, the GPS stations can precisely measure hourly changes in glacial uplift, acceleration, and thinning. On Leverett Glacier, the stations have observed small daily surges in glacial uplift and acceleration as well as large glacial surges several times a summer.

How, why, when, and how much glaciers move are surprisingly complex questions and scientists have spent decades looking into these problems. We know that glaciers grow when there is more snowfall than melt and that they are pulled downhill by gravity. Anecdotal evidence, such as old photos and people s memories, tell us that more of the world?s glaciers are shrinking than growing and that most seem to be melting faster every year. Decades of data collected by satellites, GPS stations, and field scientists have confirmed these observations and on the whole ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica, as well as most alpine glaciers everywhere, are melting rather than growing.

The meltwater river flowing from Leverett Glacier is running at record levels. Compare this to the photo of camp in the first post.

Last season, I deployed a new type of water chemistry probe designed to measure the fraction of glacial meltwater that had been ?delayed,? or stored at the base of the ice sheet. This delayed water fraction is hypothesized to be responsible for daily cycles in glacial uplift and in seasonal surges in the movement of glaciers. It seems that, to understand how ice is transported from the high cold interiors of the Greenland Ice Sheet to its edges, one has to understand this delayed water. However, proving this has been difficult, as the delayed water fraction doesn t seem to have a reliable chemical or physical signal to differentiate it from the rest of the meltwater. We hoped my new water probe would be able to detect this delayed water fraction like no other method could.

?Let me check. OK July 16, the GPS stations recorded a major glacial uplift followed by one of the biggest accelerations of the season.?

?Wow you re kidding! That was the biggest peak my water probe recorded too! OK let s check June 15, what time of day was the glacier moving fastest??

?On June 15? The glacier accelerated fastest at 2:15 p.m.?

?That s exactly what my water probe predicted!?

I couldn t believe it, the water probe my lab had developed was telling us in real time when the glacier was physically moving. It was as if we d stuck a magic wand into the river coming out from beneath the glacier, and it told us what time of day the glacier was moving and, in relative terms, by how much. What s more, the chemical mixing model we d built was predicting the volume of delayed water responsible for each daily uplift observed by the GPS stations. Everyday, the ice sheet was being lifted up, moved slightly forward, and set back down as this delayed flow water passed beneath it.

The problem with having a scientific breakthrough is that no awesome music starts up like in the movies. It s just you and your friend, sitting in a tent late at night dunking chocolate bars in mugs of warm powdered milk.

Rising Rivers

And there's even more water where that came from.

For the four of us in camp, the rising river increases our chances of being marooned. Because two rivers and the Greenland Ice Sheet surround us, we are on a sort of island. During peak meltwater flow, herds of musk ox and caribou become stranded on the island with us. Leverett River, is currently huge and drains a large section of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Another river, the Russell, drains the next glacier to the north. Our boat crossing is on the Russell River and, although it is significantly smaller than the Leverett, the Russell is prone to large, unpredictable outbursts that cause the river to rise rapidly (over the course of several days) and stay high for weeks on end. Last season, I crossed without incident on July 4, but several days later, two members from our team made the crossing in the morning, spent the day in town and returned that evening to find the river doubled in size and full of icebergs. We shut down the river crossing and a helicopter had to fly several people in and out of camp. I wasn t able to get out on those flights, so I stayed in camp a week longer than expected, waiting out the high water. The river was finally safe to cross again on August 10.

During the two seasons before last, the boat crossing was at a wider, slower section of the Russell that seemed to handle strong currents better. However, wider crossing was ripped out during a massive outburst event in August 2010. The river went back down a few weeks later and everyone stuck in camp were able to walk across the river in chest waders.

We had hoped to find another, more suitable location for our boat crossing this season, but found nothing even remotely better or safer than the 2011 location, so there it s stayed. If the river becomes too large to cross again this year, those of us on the camp side will have to wait out the high water because we are out of funding for a helicopter resupply or evacuation. Fortunately, we seem to have plenty of expired canned hot dogs.

If we are again marooned in our camp, I ll send a satellite phone call to get a note put up on this blog that our team is stuck on one side of the river and to check back later.

iPhone 4/4S Retina display vs the competition

One of the most common questions that frequently comes up is if the iPhone 4/4S Retina display can still hang with the competition in key areas.

The answer is yes.

*This has nothing to do with the OS, Apps, or anything else. Just pure display tech. Everyone's eyes are different, but this is how I saw it.

Key bullet points:
-Brightness
-Clarity
-Color reproduction
-Text legibility
-Level of artifacts during video playback

Rankings:

1. HTC One X/Evo 4G LTE
2. Motorola Atrix HD
3. iPhone 4S/4
4. Sony Xperia iON
5. Samsung Galaxy SIII
6. HTC One S
7. HTC Titan II
8. Samsung Galaxy Nexus
9. Nokia Lumia 900
10. Samsung Galaxy SII

Summary:
I think the One X has the best display in the business hands down. It's big, it's bright, and very clear and easy on the eyes. Video looks awesome too.

The Motorola Atrix HD was far more impressive than I expected. It's incredibly sharp, and the brightness was probably the best of all the phones.

Then comes the iPhone 4S. It's still one of the brightest, sharpest screens on the market, despite being released in 2010. Text looks great with a hint of anti-aliasing to soften the edges, colors are slightly understated, but natural looking, with great sharpness when content is zoomed in or out.

Very simply, the iPhone 4S screen is still one of the best in the business.

Edit: The Sony Xperia iON was a surprising sleeper in terms of displays.

Manage Your Mindset And Boost Your Self-Esteem | Healthy ...

Manage Your Mindset And Boost Your Self-Esteem

Article by June Hardy

No matter what, never let very low self esteem wreck your life. Your mental image of yourself determines how you communicate with others.

What are instances of low self-esteem that will require improvement?

1. Nothing you are doing appears to come out right.2. You are convinced that people don?t like you.3. You believe that you are not attractive.4. You decide on something and it winds up being the most unfortunate one.5. You are reluctant to talk with others in case your words might be thought of as ridiculous.6. You feel overpowered in a whirlpool of dissatisfaction.

What?s the matter with you? Your own mindset, actually.

Quit assuming that the whole world is lining up against you. Be determined to reach what you need. Stop blaming others for your misfortunes. The entire world is not your problem, you really are your own problem.

From this moment on, begin the procedure of self esteem improvement. Fix up your thinking and be resolved to win, and win you will. Just keep in mind that being successful never comes without difficulty and that is why self discipline is its counterpart.

Oftentimes, one gets to the point of success and with just a little frustration or setback, they give up too easily and too soon. That?s a surefire recipe for low self esteem. Who knows what incredible things might have been produced if only they had persevered?

Devoid of high self esteem, your life could be pretty uninteresting. Shift your thinking and begin to see yourself on top of the world. Make a very special effort to be what you really intend to be.

You have to genuinely make up your mind either to linger in a pitiful state of low self esteem, or achieve high self esteem with solid character and self image.

The source of low self esteem.

Very low self esteem could start out way back in the early years when young children are made to believe that they are not worthwhile. Their self esteem is diminished and they succumb to the idea that they can never attain success in anything that they do. They were picked on, made fun of, pushed around, called awful names, and treated with derision. No wonder they grew up to be full of hostility.

If that was your past experience, it?s now time you cut yourself loose from that frame of mind and do some self esteem recovery. Start reading about the lives of highly effective people and you will soon find out that a lot of them had such low self esteem that they were not able to even finish a basic education.

Many of them elected to overcome their low self esteem and improve their outlook, whatever it took. They became some of the most powerful persons that ever lived.

Low self esteem has never inspired anyone else and it sure will not help you. It can only send you into despair, resentment, bitterness, fear and all the other evils that it yields.

So, re-program your thoughts and deal with your state of mind. You must believe in your worthiness or you will keep on being at the foot of the ladder and never make an effort to climb it.

Don?t fritter your life away with feelings of incompetence. Instead, think of ways to go about boosting your self esteem.

The realities of International business travel for this crazy woman ...

I?ve made the same mistake now, about three times. I over packed. I over packed, and paid $1000 for it on United Airlines. I think the old adage is that the less you have, the more you hoard? But I?ll say for international travel, the less you know, the more you hoard.

Reflecting on the two weeks I spent in the city of Yeketerinburg, Russia last month, I think I could have gotten away with a lot less stuff; about four pairs of shoes (not the 10 pairs I brought). I could have brought two dresses a couple of shirts and skirts?instead of the nearly thrice that I brought. I didn?t need any reading material for the flight or long hotel nights. There are in-flight movies and sleep and night were spent mostly processing the day?s events and sleeping. I certainly didn?t need the two sets of toiletries and make-up (one for the carry-on in case my luggage didn?t arrive). Oh and the mountain of power bars too?I brought a whole bunch home uneaten.

The mistake is not so much misinformation or ignorance as it is fear. I run an international women?s empowerment program in remote areas of the world and the irony is that in my own silly ways, I?m still working on my own empowerment. I fear that I won?t have what I need, that I will be naked and makeup-less, filthy and hungry in the middle of nowhere and be expected to present a PowerPoint on my corporation to donors. I would like to tell you exactly what I imagine, but it may not be precisely accurate to say I have an idea in my head. I can?t really imagine it at all. Is there food? Is the weather hot? Cold? Will I need to wash everyday or every other day? Who exactly will I be meeting and what will they expect from me? I?m not just touring here, where I can throw on my flip flops and wander down to the hotel lobby and around town. I?m in power meetings with influential people, able to make or break my efforts in the area. I can?t just walk in wearing week-old smelly clothes.
So like any good woman obsessing on her future needs, I sorted through all the possible darkest scenarios and packed for the worst. Ironically, the worst is actually standing in a psycho crazy international airport without a stitch of the local language in my head and trying to negotiate my way out of a $400 over weight fee and then hauling all that heavy crap through the airport when I arrive in the states. That?s the worst! And I?ve forgotten that three times?Jerusalem; Yerevan, Armenia and now Yeketerinburg, Russia.

So, I?m writing this blog and committing to getting myself a reasonable suitcase- one that rolls on four wheels, that?s durable enough to get through to Banjul, Gambia (West Africa) intact and one that will not compromise my stuff. I?m NOT packing a full first aid kit and sewing kit, a stack of books, three curling irons (yes three?I was concerned that one would blow out?er?or that two would blow out), enough power-bars to feed myself for two weeks, a closet full of clothes and more shoes than the women in my classes own. And no more of these heels! Heck, I packed a formal floor-length dress for this last one. In my defense, the agenda called for a formal reception the last night of the program and like a 12-year-old packing for camp, from a list, I packed my formal. I brought it home unworn and paid a good $1000 for the privilege of hauling it, and a sundry of other junk, to the border of Europe/Asia and back. It cost me $400 at the US airport, $200 in Moscow and then another $400 on my way back.

When the agenda calls for a formal, I?m going to bring a set of pearls and put it with whatever I?ve got. If they want to see me in a formal, they will need to come to Salt Lake City, UT where I can access my closet for free. And for that matter, if I am starving, naked, filthy and pitiful and someone asks for a PPT on my corporation, it will be all the more dramatic!

    Yahoo?says password vulnerability fixed

    44 min.

Yahoo says it has fixed the vulnerability that allowed 450,000 user email addresses and passwords to be?stolen from its user-generated content service, Yahoo! Voices.

In a blog posting, Yahoo?said that the "compromised information was provided by writers who had joined Associated Content?prior to May 2010, when it was acquired by Yahoo!.? (Associated Content is now the Yahoo! Contributor Network.)? This compromised file was a standalone file that was not used to grant access to Yahoo! systems and services."

The vulnerability has been taken care of, Yahoo said; it's also put into place "additional security measures for affected Yahoo! users,?enhanced our underlying security controls?and are?in the process of notifying affected users.

"In addition, we will continue to take significant measures to protect our users and their data."

Yahoo is advising users who joined Associated Content before May 2010 using their Yahoo email address to log into their Yahoo account, where they may be prompted to answer a series of authentication questions to change and validate their credentials.

Earlier in the week, the company confirmed?that an "older file from Yahoo! Contributor Network (previously Associated Content) containing approximately 400,000 Yahoo! and other company users names and passwords" were stolen July 11.

Security company ESET?broke down the Yahoo! Voices data?and found that the most common password was "123456," followed by "password" and "welcome," according to SecurityNewsDaily, which said the most common password length was eight characters, and fully one-third of the passwords contained only lower-case letters.

"Yahoo! Voices' administrators made a big mistake storing the passwords in plaintext, but all users need to bolster their own security as well. Make passwords harder to guess by making them more than eight characters long, and pepper them with upper-case letters, numbers and punctuation marks."
