Google Bought A Company That Collects Wind Power From Airborne Turbines 2,000 Feet Above Ground (GOOG)

Google confirmed to Bloomberg Businesweek today that it bought Makani Power, a company that makes airborne turbines that collect wind power and delivers it to the ground via a tethered cable.

Makani Power will become part of Google X, Google's secret lab where it develops "moonshot" projects like the Google Glass computerized headgear and self-driving cars. Google did not disclose how much it paid for Makani Power.

Businessweek has a full profile on Google X. You can read it here >

Google Now style voice search now live in Chrome stable channel

Google Now in Chrome.

Google Now voice search goes live in the latest Chrome desktop builds

Ladies and gents, it's time to upgrade your Chrome browser. Google Now style voice search has just went live in the latest Chrome stable version for the desktop (Version 27.0.1453.93). As far as we can tell from playing around testing things, the full contextual search isn't running like we saw in the demo during the Google I/O keynote, but the basic voice search and response is ready to go.

To get the latest update is easy. Open the settings in the Chrome browser, and click the Help line entry. Give it a second or two to start checking, and when it tells you to restart Chrome, just restart your whole browser session. When things come back, head to www.google.com and click the microphone in the search box.

You have to give permission (look for the bar across the top of the window) to listen to your voice, then start asking questions. Welcome to the future! We've got a couple screenshots after the break just in case you're not able to update or don't use Chrome.

Thanks, Christian!

x86'd: How PC architecture could push Nintendo out of the next gen

x86'd: how PC architecture might be pushing Nintendo out of the next gen

It didn't take long for console warriors, fanboys and a brutal media to take aim at Nintendo's Wii U. The fledgling system was relentlessly teased for its name (seemingly even sillier than that of its predecessor) and a list of specifications certain to be outdone by its competitors. The device's novel tablet controller stayed judgment for a short time, but it didn't last long -- a weak launch lineup, a slow operating system and software delays soured an already judgmental community.

Wii U detractors eventually climbed atop their soapboxes to issue their final verdicts: Nintendo is doomed. A premature prophecy, perhaps, but one that became increasingly difficult to argue with: diminishing sales and third-party desertion set a negative tone for the Wii U's future. Dedicated fans (this editor among them) quickly fell into a defensive position, dismissing EA's abandonment of the platform with promises of Nintendo's own first-party wonders. Optimism reigns supreme. Still, with both Microsoft and Sony's cards on the table, it's clear that Nintendo is about to take another hit.

Dragonfly Wings Are Amazing In Slow Motion

Destin, our friend over at Smarter Every Day, has expanded our brains once again. Did you know that dragonfly wings work differently than nearly every other insect, utilizing a direct flight mechanism? Did you know that they can operate each wing independently, enabling them to glide like a bird? Even if you did know all that, you've probably never seen that complex musculature in action.

Shooting these beautiful bugs with a Phantom Miro high-speed camera, we get a unique and mesmerizing view. I'll never look at them the same way again. [Smarter Every Day]

Corbin improves to 7-0 as D-backs top Rockies

By PAT GRAHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:38 p.m. ET May 20, 2013

DENVER (AP) - Patrick Corbin was a maestro on the mound, making his slider move all over the place.

And after the Arizona Diamondbacks lefty finished off his virtuoso performance, he calmly sauntered over to congratulate his catcher, casually shook his hand and coolly walked off the field.

There were no big displays of emotion to celebrate Corbin's first complete game. This is simply what he expects and, lately, what Arizona expects out of him.

Corbin tossed a three-hitter and struck out a career-high 10 to lift the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

"That's what you're trying to do every time you go out there," Corbin modestly said.

Starts like this have pretty much been the standard for Corbin. He entered the game with a 1.52 ERA and actually lowered it to 1.44 with this gem.

Corbin (7-0) also joined Randy Johnson as the only lefties in team history to begin the season 7-0. He also turned in his club-record ninth straight start where he's pitched at least six innings and allowed two runs or fewer.

"He dominated today," catcher Miguel Montero said.

To think, warming up, Corbin thought he might be in for a long night, too. He was struggling in the pregame session with Montero, and couldn't seem to locate his pitches.

In the first inning, Corbin walked leadoff batter Eric Young Jr. But then Dexter Fowler lined into a double play and from there Corbin was in complete command.

"In the first inning, if they would've hopped on me there ...," Corbin said, shaking his head.

But they didn't. And they wouldn't.

Mixing an effective slider with a sneaky fastball, Corbin kept the Rockies hitters guessing all night.

He held Colorado hitless until Troy Tulowitzki's single up the middle in the fourth and didn't allow another hit until Nolan Arenado's double in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Jordan Pacheco broke up Corbin's shutout bid with a double that brought home Arenado.

"He just pitched an unbelievable game. I don't know what else to say," Arenado said. "Obviously, we needed to play better, but he pitched a really good game."

About the only drama left in the ninth was whether Corbin would finish it. The bullpen doors briefly opened in the outfield, but that was just a ruse as Corbin trotted out of the dugout. He warmed up his arm by waving it in circles and then retired the side.

Just like on the mound, Corbin was composed after finishing off the win, shaking hands with Montero.

"I didn't want to show too much emotion, I guess," Corbin explained. "It's great. Miggy did a great job again behind the plate."

While Corbin shined, Jon Garland (3-5) struggled. He went six innings, allowing five runs and a season-high 11 hits.

"Put your team down like that, it's terrible," Garland said. "I've done it my last four or five starts. I'm trying to figure it out."

Didi Gregorius had a big night, driving in runs with a double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. A.J. Pollock produced at the bottom of the lineup as he finished with three singles and scored two runs to help the NL West-leading Diamondbacks.

Paul Goldschmidt and Eric Chavez had RBI singles in the third, staking Arizona to a 3-0 lead. That was more than enough for Corbin, who's only allowed a total of two runs over his past three starts.

Corbin is a completely different pitcher this season, one who's trusting his slider more and throwing a lot more strikes. Of his 97 pitches on Monday, 74 were for strikes.

His previous high for strikeouts was eight last August against Cincinnati. He surpassed that total when he struck out Carlos Gonzalez in the seventh.

"He had it all working," manager Kirk Gibson said.

Corbin also remains one of five undefeated starting pitchers in the league with a minimum of eight starts, along with Matt Moore (8-0), Clay Buchholz (6-0), Matt Harvey (5-0) and Max Scherzer (5-0).

Chavez tripled in the second and scored when the Rockies couldn't turn an inning-ending double play on Montero's grounder.

The 35-year-old Chavez is off to a torrid start, in part because Gibson refuses to overuse the infielder given his history of back issues. Rarely will Gibson use Chavez more than two games in a row.

"You'll find if I do it (play him more) he will wear down a little bit and probably have medical problems," Gibson said. "We can't afford that."

NOTES: Rockies OF Michael Cuddyer expects to be in the lineup Friday in San Francisco when he's eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list. He's feeling better after receiving an epidural last week to relieve pain and stiffness in his neck. Cuddyer is on the DL with an inflamed cervical disk. He's headed to Arizona for two games of extended spring training, just to squeeze in some plate appearances. "Doing good, doing good," Cuddyer said in the clubhouse Monday. ... Johnson started 7-0 in 2000. ... The Diamondbacks will throw RHP Ian Kennedy (2-3) on Tuesday night, while the Rockies counter with RHP Jhoulys Chacin.

Vital Point Strikes: The Art and Science of Striking Vital Targets for Self-defense and Combat SportsVital Point Strikes: The Art and Science of Striking Vital Targets for Self-defense and Combat SportsVital Point Strikes is a guide to pressure point striking for the average martial artist. Sang H. Kim demystifies the lore of vital point striking and shows you realistic applications of vital point strikes for self-defense and combat sports. For those new to the concept of vital points, he begins by examining the Eastern theory of acupoints, meridians and ki (qi) and the Western scientific concepts of the nervous and circulatory systems, pain threshold and pain tolerance, and the relationship between pain and fear. This synthesis of accepted Eastern and Western theories helps the reader understand what makes vital point striking work and why it can be not only useful in fighting, but deadly. Based on this introduction, you ll learn about 202 vital points for use in fighting including the name, point number, location, involved nerves and blood vessels, applicable techniques, sample applications, and potential results for each point. The points are illustrated in detail on an anatomically correct human model, with English, Chinese, and Korean names as well as point numbers for easy reference. In addition to identifying the vital points, Sang H. Kim gives you detailed information about the type of techniques that work for vital point striking including a discussion of fighting zones and ranges, plexus strikes, stance and footwork, bodily weapons, striking directions and angles and dozens of applications for common empty hand, grappling, groundfighting, knife and gun attacks. Based on over thirty years experience in the martial arts and in-depth research, Sang H. Kim has created one of the most complete books available on the art and science of vital point striking. It?s not about being bigger or stronger than others. It?s not about what you look like, whether you?re a man or a woman or how old you are.

At the end of the day, the you will survive because your mind and body are strong and united. We?ve all heard stories of super-human strength ? the grandma who lifted up with her bare hands to save her grandson and other such stories abound.

But the same thing can happen mentally ? at times of great stress, you can acquire super-human mental powers as well as physical. Like the lady who is mugged at gunpoint and says something that spooks the robber. He runs away, dropping her purse, and the woman picks it up and walks off like nothing happened.

How do we access our super-human potential when we need it most?

How can you fight off four assailants at once?

How can you talk your way out of being robbed?

How can you protect yourself and your family when something goes wrong?

These questions haunted me for years. I would often lay awake at night or daydream about potential fights or conflicts. Some guy at the bar comes at me with a knife so I use a typical Aikido move to disarm him and throw him on the ground using his own force. I get jumped from behind in an alleyway and knocked on the ground... the scenarios played through my head over and over like a moviescreen. Only this wasn?t the movies. It wasn?t real either ? it was practice.

And that practice payed off ? in a big way.

I want this book to prepare you for what may lie ahead. No one knows what the future holds. But even if you never have to face an attack or serious bodily harm for the rest of your life, this book will prepare you mentally and physically for when times get tough.

Life isn?t about being bigger, stronger, fast or smarter than the competition. Life is about survival. It?s about freedom, confidence and success. This book will give you the tools and the confidence to know that you will survive no matter what happens.

COMMONWEALTH BASEBALL FINAL: Winning title is never old ...

THE SPORTS DESK

The authority for sports coverage in the Fredericksburg region.

Players come and go through the Colonial Forge baseball program, but for coach Shawn Zakelyhidi?s Eagles, there?s nearly always one constant: playing for a Commonwealth District tournament title.

During the past 14 years, the Eagles have participated in 10 championship games. On Monday, they won for the fifth time, overpowering Riverbend, 11?0, with one of their best offensive performances of the season.

It was the second straight district championship for Colonial Forge (18?5), which will host either Osbourn Park or Franklin County on Monday in the Northwest Region quarterfinals.

Riverbend (14?9), which has won 10 of its past 12 games, will entertain Broad Run Thursday in a Northwest first-round contest.

?It was fun tonight,? Szakelyhidi said. ?We?ve been in this game a lot over the years. It was great for our seniors to get this trophy. We don?t have a lot of superstars, just a hard-working group that keeps battling.?

Against the Bears, they started the battle early and never let up, riding the strong pitching of Colton Steber and a 12-hit attack that produced a 6?0 lead after two innings and kept building steam.

Nine Eagles collected hits in the game, including two apiece by Cole Migliorini, John Gardner and Ronald Maniece. Gardner also drove in three runs and Migliorini two.

Center fielder Michael Mares went deep in the bottom of the sixth with his second home run of the year to cap off the Eagles? scoring outburst.

?Hitting is contagious,? Szakelyhidi said. ?It all started for us today with Colton Steber on the mound. Then we were able to score some runs and get some ground balls and double plays behind him.?

The senior right-hander turned in a workmanlike job, scattering six hits over six innings and striking out five to improve to 8?1. In the third and fourth innings, the Eagles? defense gave him a nice lift with two well-executed double plays.

?The run production was great,? Steber said. ?It felt so good to have that support and knowing that I just had to go out there and take care of my side of it. We?re really figuring it out now.?

Steber was in control from the start, limiting Riverbend to just three hits in the first three frames. Meanwhile, Colonial Forge?s offense jumped on Bears? starter Nekae Reid with a barrage of timely hitting.

In the bottom of the first, Maniece got the production started with an infield hit and then scored along with David Edwards on a single to right center by Gardner. Designated hitter Davian Escobar followed with a single to left to bring Gardner home and make it 3?0.

The Eagles kept the pressure on, adding three more runs in the second to build a 6?0 advantage. Two of the runs came on a line drive by Shawn Nickles after Maniece had reached on his second straight hit.

?It feels really good to be able to get these back-to-back championships for our coaches,? Maniece said. ?They?ve been doing this for 14 years. We really wanted to win this one.?

Steber exemplified that drive on the mound with his control, and the Eagles? bats continued to give him the run support he needed to notch his eighth victory.

Migliorini accounted for three more runs with a pair of doubles, including one in the fifth, when the Eagles scored three times to push the margin to 10?0.

?We got into a really deep hole and Forge is just too good of a team to do that against,? said Riverbend coach Tim Stimmell. ?But we?ve got another game coming up. We?ll go to work tomorrow and get ready for Broad Run.?

Deezer outs Xbox Live app, available now to Premium subscribers in Europe

While Microsoft may have unveiled a new generation of its Xbox console yesterday, some companies are still trying to get a piece of real estate on the current ecosystem. Today, Deezer announced that it's making a debut on Xbox Live, giving (some) users of the streaming service access to its extensive music repertoire right from the 360. The app will be available "across Europe" for now, and mum's the word on when, or if, Deezer plans to launch in more markets. For those living in The Old Continent, however, all you'll need is a Premium+ subscription and, as is often the case with similar offerings, a Gold membership on Xbox Live. Jam on.

The Wear and Tear of Rumination on Mental Health - Promises

Negative emotions are emotional states that tend to limit your personal perspective, decrease your ability to think rationally and increase your overall level of mental unease or distress. Current evidence indicates that negative emotional responses to stressful situations can significantly increase your risks for eventually developing a diagnosable case of the serious mental health disorder called major depression. According to the results of a study published in 2012 in the journal Psychological Science, people already affected by major depression can lose their ability to tell the difference between various types of negative emotion. In turn, this inability can prolong or reinforce a depressed state of mind.

Negative Emotion Basics

Emotional states commonly viewed as ?negative? include anger, frustration, sadness, anxiousness, guilt, disgust and shame. All of these emotions fall within the normal realm of human experience, and their presence doesn?t indicate a problem in and of itself. However, people who tend to call forth these emotions frequently while under stress can increase their long-term chances for developing a diagnosable mental health problem, according to the results of a study released in 2012 by a multi-university research team. Mental health professionals sometimes refer to this repeated involvement in negative states of mind as a personality trait called neuroticism/negative emotionality.

Importance of Identifying Negative Emotions

The ability to properly distinguish between different types of negative emotion can help depressed people limit those emotions? effects and improve their overall state of mind, the authors of the study published in Psychological Science report. Conversely, people with major depression who can?t correctly identify their negative emotions may unintentionally extend or solidify depressed states of mind. During their research, the authors examined the ability of 53 people affected by depression to tell the difference between their negative emotions, then compared that ability to the ability of 53 people unaffected by depression. All study participants were adults with a minimum age of 18 and a maximum age of 40.

The researchers concluded that, compared to people who don?t have major depression, people affected by the disorder have a much greater tendency to report the simultaneous presence of two different negative emotional states. Depressed people also have a much harder time distinguishing between the negative emotions they report feeling. The study?s authors believe that this inability to tell the difference between negative emotions decreases depressed individuals? knowledge about their own states of mind, and therefore limits the self-awareness necessary to effectively participate in depression recovery.

Self-Distancing Skills in Depressed People

One of the critical skills for maintaining emotional stability is the ability to step back from oneself and objectively examine stressful or ?negative? experiences. People who have this self-distancing ability tend to diminish the long-term impact of negative experiences; conversely, people who lack this self-distancing skill tend to ruminate on unpleasant experiences and increase those experiences? long-term influence on mental health. In a study published in 2012 in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, a team of researchers from the University of Michigan compared the self-distancing abilities of 51 people diagnosed with major depression to the abilities of 45 people unaffected by depression. All of the study participants were asked to analyze their responses to a negative situation.

After reviewing their findings, the authors of the study concluded that depressed people have just as much inherent ability to self-distance themselves from negative experiences as people without depression. However, while people unaffected by depression tend to access their self-distancing skills when analyzing their situations, people with depression tend not to do so. When depressed people in the study did access their self-distancing skills, they typically lowered their participation in negative thinking and other aspects of neuroticism/negative emotionality. In addition, they increased their sense of self-awareness and gained a perspective that allowed them to minimalize the effects of stressful or negative situations.

Considerations

The authors of the study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that people unaffected by depression tend to improve their emotional states whenever they start questioning themselves in the aftermath of stressful or negative events. However, depressed people may improve or diminish their mental states when they start self-questioning. If this questioning process remains immersed in a depressed person?s everyday perspective, it will likely contribute to a continuing depressed state of mind. However, if this questioning is done from a distanced perspective, it can help reduce the effects of depression and contribute to a more balanced state of mind.

Scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Lund University, Sweden, have bioengineered a novel molecule which has been proven to successfully kill tumour cells.

This molecule is based on a natural protein present in human breast milk, which has been found to have strong and wide-ranging tumour killing properties when bound to certain lipids. Lipids are organic molecules like amino acids and carbohydrates, made up of carbon and hydrogen, and help to store energy and to form biological membranes.

The protein-lipid molecule complex, is known as HAMLET, which stands for Human Alpha-lactabumin Made Lethal to Tumour cells. It has been proven to be safe and effective as it only targets tumour cells, leaving healthy human cells intact.

HAMLET has most recently been shown to successfully suppress colon cancer in laboratory mice.

The scientists have also successfully identified and isolated specific components of HAMLET called peptide-oleate bound forms, which have the tumour-killing effect. Peptides are short chain amino acids commonly found in the human body.

These latest breakthroughs are led by Professor Catharina Svanborg and Dr Manoj Puthia from Lund University, Sweden, and Professor Gerhard Grber from NTU's School of Biological Sciences. The HAMLET complex was first discovered by Professor Svanborg's research group.

The findings were published recently in Gut and in PLoS ONE, two top ranking peer-reviewed academic journals. The researchers found that laboratory mice genetically modified to develop colon cancer, were protected to a large extent when fed with HAMLET-laced water. This suggested that HAMLET was killing emerging tumour cells faster than these cells could grow and proliferate.

On the new concept of a synthetic version of the tumour-killing molecule, Prof Grber said, "By studying the original protein, we have and will continue to identify key components to make a synthetic peptide, a short-chain amino acid, carrying the properties of HAMLET and yet more resilient than the original protein complex."

"By synthetically constructing the key components, this helps the peptide to be much more resilient and to 'survive' in different environments, such as in the human body or in drinking water, which is an ideal delivery medium, before it reaches its tumour target."

The ability to recreate HAMLET in synthetic form opens up possibilities of turning it into a drug to kill tumours.

Next steps|

Prof Svanborg, who is a doctor and a scientist, said she had seen promising results from the human trials using HAMLET in Sweden.

"We are now ready to test HAMLET as a therapeutic and preventive agent in colon cancer, especially in families with the genetic predisposition, where preventive options are limited," Prof Svanborg said.

"After completing the various clinical trials, we hope to develop a commercially available product for doctors' use for cancer treatment in the next five to ten years," she added.

The two lead scientists added that they are also looking to trial HAMLET in Singapore and are in talks with local institutions and industry.

New NOAA report examines national oil pollution threat from shipwrecks

May 20, 2013 ? NOAA presented to the U.S. Coast Guard today a new report that finds that 36 sunken vessels scattered across the U.S. seafloor could pose an oil pollution threat to the nation's coastal marine resources. Of those, 17 were recommended for further assessment and potential removal of both fuel oil and oil cargo.

The sunken vessels are a legacy of more than a century of U.S. commerce and warfare. They include a barge lost in rough seas in 1936; two motor-powered ships that sank in separate collisions in 1947 and 1952; and a tanker that exploded and sank in 1984. The remaining sites are 13 merchant marine ships lost during World War II, primarily along the Atlantic Seaboard and Gulf of Mexico. To see a list of the ships and their locations, visit: http://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/protect/ppw/.

The report, part of NOAA's Remediation of Underwater Legacy Environmental Threats (RULET) project, identifies the location and nature of potential sources of oil pollution from sunken vessels. Knowing where these vessels are helps oil response planning efforts and may help in the investigation of reported mystery spills--sightings of oil where a source is not immediately known or suspected.

"This report is the most comprehensive assessment to date of the potential oil pollution threats from shipwrecks in U.S. waters," said Lisa Symons, resource protection coordinator for NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. "Now that we have analyzed this data, the Coast Guard will be able to evaluate NOAA's recommendations and determine the most appropriate response to potential threats."

"The Coast Guard is pleased to receive these risk assessments from our partner agency NOAA and looks forward to our continued coordination on the matter of potential pollution associated with sunken vessels in U.S. waters," said Capt. John Caplis, the Coast Guard's chief of marine environmental response. "Coast Guard federal on-scene coordinators receiving the risk assessments will carefully review the data and incorporate it into their area contingency plans."

In 2010, Congress appropriated $1 million for NOAA to develop a list of the most significant potentially polluting wrecks in U.S. waters, including the Great Lakes, specifically addressing ecological and socio-economic resources at risk. Those funds were not intended for oil or vessel removal.

NOAA maintains the internal Resources and UnderSea Threats (RUST) database of approximately 30,000 sites of sunken material, of which 20,000 are shipwrecks. The remaining items are munitions dumpsites, navigational obstructions, underwater archaeological sites, and other underwater resources.

Initial screening of these shipwrecks revealed 573 that could pose substantial pollution risks, based on the vessel's age, type, and size. This includes vessels built after 1891, when U.S. vessels began using fuel oil; vessels built of steel; vessels over 1,000 gross tons, and any tank vessel.

Additional research about the circumstances of each vessel's loss narrowed that number to 107 shipwrecks. Of those, some were deemed navigational hazards and demolished, and others were salvaged. Most of the 107 wrecks have not been directly surveyed for pollution potential, and in some cases little is known about their current condition.

To prioritize and determine which vessels are candidates for further evaluation, NOAA used a series of risk factors to assess the likelihood of substantial amounts of oil remaining onboard, and the potential ecological and environmental effects if that oil spills. Risk factors include the total oil volume onboard as cargo or fuel, the type of oil, and the nature of the sinking event. For example, a vessel that was struck by multiple torpedoes would likely contain less oil than a vessel that sank in bad weather.

After this third level of screening, 87 wrecks remained on the list developed for the Coast Guard's area contingency plans. Among this group, NOAA determined that 36 shipwrecks are candidates for a "Worst Case" discharge event in which the shipwreck's entire fuel oil and oil cargo would be released simultaneously, and recommended that 17 of these wrecks be considered for further assessment and feasibility of oil removal.

Six wrecks are potential candidates for a "Most Probable" discharge event, where a shipwreck could lose approximately 10 percent of its fuel oil or oil cargo. To date, known oil discharges from shipwrecks are typically in the "Most Probable" category or smaller.

The report, including 87 risk assessments, is not intended to direct Coast Guard activities, but rather provide the Coast Guard with NOAA's scientific and technical assessment and guidance as a natural resource and cultural heritage trustee.

The Coast Guard, as the federal On-scene Coordinator for mitigating oil spills in the coastal marine environment, the Regional Response Teams, and local Area Committees, as established under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, will review and incorporate the assessments into regional and area marine environmental response contingency plans. The individual risk assessments not only highlight concerns about potential ecological and socio-economic impacts, but also characterize most of the vessels as historically significant and many of them as grave sites, both civilian and military.

Funding for any assessment or recovery operations determined to be necessary is dependent upon the unique circumstances of the wreck. If a wreck still has an identifiable owner, that owner is responsible for the cost of cleanup. Coast Guard officials say that if no responsible party exists, the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund would likely be accessed.

Small Fla. city anxious to learn jackpot winner

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. (AP) ? It could be an anxious wait of up to two months for people in a small Florida city to find out who won the highest Powerball jackpot in history: an estimated $590.5 million.

The lucky ticket was bought sometime Saturday or earlier at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a city of about 13,000 people best known around the state for its brand of spring water with the same name.

The winner has 60 days to claim the lump-sum cash option, estimated around $376.9 million, at the Florida Lottery's office in Tallahassee. No one had come forward as of Sunday afternoon.

"It never happens this quickly," lottery spokesman David Bishop said. "If they know they won, they're going to contact their attorney or an accountant first so they can get their affairs in order."

The winner wasn't Matthew Bogel. On Sunday, he loaded groceries into his car after shopping at the Publix. He shook his head when asked about the jackpot.

"It's crazy, isn't it?" he said. "That's so much money."

It's an amount too high for many to imagine. Compare it to the budget for the city of Zephyrhills: This year's figure is just more than $49 million. The winning Powerball jackpot is 12 times that.

Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous said there are a lot of rumors about who won, but the store doesn't know. "We're excited for the winner or winners," she said.

Plenty of people in Zephyrhills are wondering whether it's someone they know.

Joan Albertson drove to the Publix early Sunday morning with her camera in hand, in case the winner emerged. She said she bought a ticket at a store across the street, and the idea of winning that much money was still something of a shock.

"Oh, there's so much good that you could do with that amount of money." Albertson said. "I don't even know where to begin."

Zephyrhills is a small city in Pasco County, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. Once a rural farming town, it's now known as a hotbed for skydiving activity, and the home to large retiree mobile home parks and the water bottled from the natural springs that surround the area.

And now, one lucky lottery ticket.

"I'm getting text messages and messages from Facebook going, 'uh, did you win the lottery?'" Sandra Lewis said. "No, I didn't win, guys. Sorry."

Sara Jeltis said her parents in Michigan texted her with the news Sunday morning.

"Well, it didn't click until I came here," she said, gesturing to the half-dozen TV live trucks humming in the Publix parking lot. "And I'm like, 'Wow I can't believe it, it's shocking!' Out of the whole country, this Publix, in little Zephyrhills would be the winner."

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, lottery executives said Saturday that someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

The winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Estimates had earlier put the jackpot at around $600 million. But Powerball's online site said Sunday that the jackpot had reached an estimated $590.5 million.

The world's largest jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012.

Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, initially confirmed that one Florida winning ticket had been sold. He told The Associated Press that following the Florida winner, the Powerball grand prize was being reset at an estimated jackpot of $40 million, or about $25.1 million cash value.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimated that about 80 percent of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

The longshot odds didn't deter people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday.

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

Lewis, who went to the Publix on Sunday to buy water, said she didn't play ? and she isn't upset about it.

"Life goes on," she said, shrugging. "I'm good."

Should Teachers Be Trained Like Doctors and Lawyers?

It?s no secret that America?s education system needs colossal reform.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle always campaign on the issue, and policy makers push new standards every few years. But what might just be needed is a radical approach to teaching instead of more standards and tests.

That?s what Jal Mehta examines in his new book The Allure of Order: High Hopes, Dashed Expectations, and the Troubled Quest to Remake American Schooling. While he reflects on the history of school reform movements such as the controversial No Child Left Behind, he also offers innovative solutions to revitalizing public education.

?

?

?Each time we get interested in those vehicles to try and improve schooling, we invest high hopes in them and each time they fall short,? Mehta, an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, tells TakePart.

Some of those ideas include more standardized testing and revision of standards such as the incoming Common Core State Standards. But Mehta says that there is another way to look at education in this country and it begins with teachers. In fact, he says in all seriousness, that K-12 teachers need training similar to what physicians receive.

?We let doctors operate, pilots fly and engineers build because their fields have developed effective ways of certifying that they can do these things,? he recently wrote in a New York Times op-ed. ?Teaching, on the whole, lacks this specialized knowledge base; teachers teach based mostly on what they have picked up from experience and from their colleagues.?

Comparatively, Mehta says teaching is a failed profession compared to that of lawyers and doctors. Yet, we expect just as much out of this country?s education system as we do our medical and legal systems.

Mehta says that in many instances in this country, teaching is a by-the-seat-of-the-pants profession in which young, inexperienced teachers are thrown into the classroom with very little, if any, mentoring. He would like to see more extensive training to teachers and even go so for as to tenure K-12 teachers once they have proven themselves. ?Master teachers? with years of experience would be used to train new teachers.

He argues that teaching is skilled work, and, in that regard, teachers need more extensive training.

?You need teachers that know quite a bit about their subject matter,? he says. ?For instance, in math, if you?re going to try and get kids to get the underlying concepts, you need to understand those concepts.?

But he says that there is a real problem because teachers lack much prep time for class. He cites countries like Japan and Korea where teachers teach less and have more time to plan. Teachers in the United States teach on average 1100 hours per year compared to 600-700 hours in other countries.

One way to solve this time crunch is team teaching. Mehta says more schools, which are attempting deeper interdisciplinary work, have found great success in teaming teachers from opposite subjects such as math and digital arts.

Mehta also calls for an educational equivalent of the National Institutes of Health. Otherwise he says the system will continue to fail. Commercial curriculum designers will create what districts and states want. Instead, a more uniformed system is needed. Sure, the Common Core Standards might work with key goals. But if teachers aren?t skilled, the standards may go down in the history books as another failed idea.

As for standardized testing, Mehta says that many people want it to serve as a ?magical bullet? to solve every education crisis, but that it is far more complicated than that.

?The idea that you could buy and impose these tests to transform the system as a whole is magical thinking, a magical shortcut,? he said. ?Rather, if you did all of these other things ? strong teachers with training and gave them time to think, prepare and even deal with high-poverty students ? the test scores would represent real learning.?

Residents of Manhattan will not just sweat harder from rising temperatures in the future, says a new study; many may die.

Researchers at Columbia University estimate deaths linked to warming climate may rise some 20 percent by the 2020s, and, in some worst-case scenarios, 90 percent or more 70 years hence.

Higher winter temperatures may partially offset heat-related deaths by cutting cold-related mortality, but even so, scientists say annual net temperature-related deaths might go up a third.

The study, published this week in the journal Nature Climate Change, was done by a team at the school's Earth Institute and the Mailman School of Public Health.

Studies of other cities have already projected adverse health effects from rising temperatures.

"This serves as a reminder that heat events are one of the greatest hazards faced by urban populations around the globe," said coauthor Radley Horton, a climate scientist at the Earth Institute's Center for Climate Systems Research.

The record 2010 heat wave that hit Russia, killing some 55,000 people, and the 2003 one in Europe that killed 70,000 are potent examples of the devastation that extreme heat can cause, Horton added.

Daily records from Manhattan's Central Park show that average monthly temperatures increased by 3.6? Fahrenheit from 1901 to 2000 ? substantially more than the global and U.S. trends. Cities tend to concentrate heat; buildings and pavement soak it up during the day and give it off at night.

Many records have been set in Manhattan recently. 2012 was the borough's warmest year on record; in each of the past three years, it has seen temperatures at or above 100?F. Projections for the future vary, but all foresee steep future average increases of 3.3?F to 4.2?F by the 2050s, and up to 7.1?F by the 2080s.

Assuming Manhattan's current population of 1.6 million remains the same, the worst-case scenario translates to more than 1,000 annual deaths.

The study also found that the largest percentage increase in deaths would come not during the traditionally sweltering months of June through August, but rather in May and September ? periods that are now generally pleasant, but which will probably increasingly become incorporated into the brutal dog days of summer.

Senior author Patrick Kinney, an environmental scientist at the Mailman School and Earth Institute faculty member, cautioned that things could be made better or worse by demographic trends and by how well New York adapts its infrastructure and policies to a warmer world.

New York is already a leader in efforts to mitigate warming, by planting trees, making surfaces such as roofs more reflective and opening air-conditioned centers where people can come to cool off. Even as city heat rose during the latter 20th century, some evidence suggests that heat-related deaths went down, Kinney noted, probably due to the introduction of home air conditioning.

"This points to the need for cities to look for ways to make themselves and their people more resilient to heat," he said.

Google+ Gets A Refresh For Android To Mirror Its 41 Update Extravaganza From I/O, Adds New Location Section

Screenshot_5_20_13_11_08_AMToday, Google has updated its Google+ app for Android to get up to speed with all of the changes announced during last week’s I/O Developers conference. In all, there were 41 new updates including a brand new stream, photos experience and of course Hangouts. The Android version has all of that, and one brand new feature, a new location section. Where the Anroid app really shines is with the photo capabilities. The updated Google+ app now has the auto backup, highlight, enhance and “auto awesome” functionality that the desktop version has. It’s be really handy to be able to enhance your photos directly within the app, rather than waiting until you get back to your computer or relying on Google to do its magical synthetic wrinkle removal, even though it’s cool. To make it easier to “make plans and meet,” Google+ has broken “Locations” out into its own section. Now, when you share your location with certain Circles, your friends can easily find you by tapping on that section. Naturally, it drops everyone’s location onto a Map, which makes it pretty seamless: Location is something that hasn’t been a great piece of Google+ to date. The service currently picks up where you are and asks you for your explicit location, not really telling you who will get to see it. With the Location section and controls, its easier to manage and can turn into an experience similar to that of Foursquare. The stream is getting all of the features from last week, too. The autohashtags will let you drill into new content, hopefully sucking up all of your free time. It turns the Google+ experience into something like Wikipedia, where you can just keep tapping on relevant content and hopefully find some new people to follow along the way. While you’re not going to get the new three-column layout on your smartphone, the drilling down is actually fun. We’ll await the iOS update, but expect the same items to find their way into that version. All of these enhancements are made to entice you to do a little bit more in Google+, as the company doesn’t really expect you to jump ship from one network to another. The features are more complimentary to one another in this update, giving a better experience to new users, which is the most important demographic for Google to focus on right now. Those of
