Sixty-five found executed in Syria's Aleppo: activists

BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least 65 people, apparently shot in the head, were found dead with their hands bound in a district of the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on Tuesday, activists said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which says it provides objective information about casualties on both sides of Syria's war from a network of monitors, said the death toll could rise as high as 80. It was not clear who had carried out the killings.

Opposition activists posted a video of a man filming at least 51 muddied male bodies alongside what they said was the Queiq River in the rebel-held Bustan al-Qasr neighborhood of Aleppo.

The bodies had gunshot wounds to their heads, and their hands were bound. Blood was seeping from their heads and some of them appeared to be young, possibly teenagers, and dressed in jeans, shirts and sneakers.

The Queiq River rises in Turkey and travels through government-held districts of Aleppo before it reaches Bustan al-Qasr.

"They were killed only because they are Muslims," said a bearded man in another video said to have been filmed in central Bustan al-Qasr after the bodies were removed from the river. A pickup truck with a pile of corpses was parked behind him.

It is hard for Reuters to verify such reports from inside Syria because of restrictions on independent media.

Government forces and rebels in Syria have both been accused by human rights groups of carrying out summary executions in the 22-month-old conflict, which has claimed more than 60,000 lives.

Rebels pushed into Aleppo, Syria's most populous city, over the summer, but are stuck in a stalemate with government forces. The city is divided roughly in half between the two sides.

The revolt started as a peaceful protest movement against more than four decades of rule by President Bashar al-Assad and his family, but turned into an armed rebellion after a government crackdown.

More than 700,000 people have fled, the United Nations says.

REBELS FIGHT KURDS

In the eastern city of Deir al-Zor, insurgents including al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters captured a security agency after days of heavy fighting, according to an activist video issued on Tuesday.

The fighters freed prisoners from the building, it added.

The video, posted online, showed men armed with assault rifles cheering as they stood outside a building that they said was a local branch of Syria's intelligence agency.

Some of the fighters carried a black flag with the Islamic declaration of faith and the name of the al-Nusra Front, which has ties to al Qaeda in neighboring Iraq. The video also showed tanks, which appeared to be damaged, and a room containing weapons.

The war has become heavily sectarian, with rebels who mostly come from the Sunni Muslim majority fighting an army whose top generals are mostly from Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. Assad has framed the revolt as a foreign-backed conspiracy and blames the West and Sunni Gulf states.

Fighting also took place in the northern town of Ras al-Ain, on the border with Turkey, between rebels and Kurdish militants, the Observatory said.

The insurgents have been battling fighters of the Kurdish People's Defence Units for about two weeks in the area, and scores of people have died in the violence.

Simon Arias Electrifies at American Income Life Leadership ...

?

Simon Arias - American Income Life SGA

Simon Arias ? American Income Life SGA

Simon Arias,?American Income Life?s reigning SGA of the Year,?didn?t?spend the minutes leading up to his first speech reading over notes, nor did he spend it rehearsing the message he was about to impart on more than 130 future AIL leaders.

Rather, he spent the final minutes before his heavily anticipated appearance at #AILLA101?signing autographs, taking photos with attendees, and flying through the filled-to-capacity Conference Center in a?Tasmanian?Devil-like explosion of high fives, hugs, and even a detailed secret handshake or two.

As Scott Smith, President and CMO of AIL, introduced Simon to the #AILLA101 attendees, he recognized Simon?s undeniable celebrity-status at AIL ? but Scott made clear how that status came to be: through unstoppable drive, overflowing passion, and month-after-month consistency that set the bar for high-level management performance.

Calling AIL the Company that ?helped me turn from a boy to a man,? Simon spoke of the privilege he felt in addressing the next generation of American Income Life leaders. Following that brief moment of sentimentality, Simon unleashed an hour-long speech touching on the power of positive thinking, the need to invest in oneself, and the idea of perpetual self-improvement, both personally and professionally.

?My goal is to write one million per week,? Simon said with a fiery passion, along the way asking attendees of their personal vision. ?One million per week,? he repeated ? ?I?m SPEAKING IT into existence!?

American Income Life SGA Simon Arias giving high fives before his speech at Leadership Academy 101

How does he plan on reaching that goal? The same way all the greats throughout history have met their goals ? by overcoming negative thought; by working on themselves; by taking control of their own destiny.

?To overcome negative thought,? Simon says, ?is to enter into a lifetime of POWER. If you invest in yourself, things around you will change,? Simon, living proof, insisted. ?There are 168 hours in a week ? spend seven of those hours on strengthening your mind, body, and spirit,? he said, whether that means running on the treadmill, reading inspirational words, or letting loved ones know how much you care. ?Don?t tell yourself you don?t have time for these things,? Simon says. ?Don?t become a slave to your negative thoughts.?

Simon spoke of the aggressive drive he applies to recruiting and Agency building, and how that no-holds-barred attitude is rooted in his past. While his past is surely unique, having grown up in an impoverished and dangerous neighborhood, it surely doesn?t make Simon ?special? (no more special than the average AIL Agent, at least) ? it simply provided him that extra bit of passion that, as he says, ?separates the champions from the chickens.?

For some, that drive may be rooted in past failures; for others, it?s rooted in future promises. Wherever its source, you must take hold of the expectations you?ve set for yourselves and move them to the forefront of your priorities. If you do, success will come, both at American Income Life and in your own life.

?We?re all going to feel either the pain of discipline, or the pain of disappointment ? well, it?s your decision; choose your pain,? says the 29-year-old Pennsylvania-based wunderkind.

After Simon?s first of two speeches at #AILLA101, the decision for all 130+ attendees was an easy one.

How are YOU investing in yourself, both personally and professionally?

Conservative Hispanic group tells GOP to avoid ?amnesty? label

May Day protests in New York City (Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

A conservative pro-immigration reform group has issued talking points to Republican lawmakers, telling them to avoid referring to the children of illegal immigrants as "anchor babies" or calling for the construction of an "electric fence" on the border, among other things.

The talking points, published by BuzzFeed, went out to Republican lawmakers on the Hill as momentum builds for an immigration bill that would legalize most of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants. The memo urges lawmakers to call illegal immigrants "undocumented immigrants" and to avoid terms such as "aliens" or "illegals." Another phrase to avoid? "Send them all back."

"Conservatives get a bad rap when it comes to immigration reform because of a few people who say things that can be taken to be offensive," said Jennifer Korn, executive director of the Hispanic Leadership Network, the center-right group that sent the talking points on Monday. "It all means the same thing, but the way you say it matters."

Korn worked in the White House when President George W. Bush attempted to get immigration reform passed in his second term. Two bills?one in 2006, the other in 2007?died after a vocal grass-roots movement emerged in opposition to what it called "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. The amnesty tag stuck, even though both bills would have required any applicant to go through a lengthy legalization process that required him or her to meet certain requirements, like paying back taxes and a fine and learning English.

Korn hopes theses talking points will help avoid the "pitfalls" she saw then.

"Right now what's really giving me heartburn is people saying 'pathway to citizenship,'" she said. "It's not a pathway to citizenship. It's 'earned legal status.' If you want conservative support you have to explain what it is so there's not this knee-jerk reaction of 'No amnesty!'"

Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida who's part of a bipartisan group of senators pushing for immigration reform, has used "earned residency" at times in interviews with conservative talk show hosts to describe what immigration reform would provide to qualifying illegal immigrants.

Meatless Monday: Roasted squash and quinoa salad

Make two meals from one effort by first roasting squash as a side dish, and then using leftovers to star in leafy green salad.

By France Morissette and Joshua Sprague,?Beyond The Peel / January 27, 2013

Roast butternut squash with flavorful cumin for a side dish. Toss any leftovers the next day with greens, quinoa, nuts, dried fruit of your choice, and a citrus dressing.

I?m a big fan of doubling my efforts to get two meals in one. Today?s recipe is one of those. Actually, I find all roasted veggies really have that potential. Like the Roasted Carrot recipe I shared a while back, or roast beets to make this soup today and use the rest to make this Roasted Beet Bruschetta tomorrow.

I mean really, isn?t it nice to not have to always cook every night?

Isn?t having a night off from time to time such a great feeling?

I love cooking but even I need a night ?off? once or twice a week. In case you were wondering, I don?t consider making a salad cooking, or chopping up vegetables to eat on toasted bread as cooking either, nor is heating up leftovers (one of my favorite cooking experiences). To me that?s just getting ready to eat.

With squash being plentiful and very inexpensive it makes a great side dish with dinner tonight and a fabulous salad or soup tomorrow. I recommend making quinoa and roasted squash as a side dish one night, then using the leftovers, you can make this salad for a fabulous lunch or even a delightful dinner salad that won?t taste like you?re eating last nights leftovers.

That?s always a good thing.

Roasted Cumin Spiced Squash

2 lbs. of cubed butternut squash

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika

salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Peel and remove the seeds from the squash. Cube the squash into bite sized pieces and put in a large bowl. Toss the squash with the oil, cumin and paprika. Place the squash on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt. Roast for 35-45 minutes or until squash is tender.

Roasted Squash and Quinoa Salad

2 cups roasted squash

2 cups cooked quinoa

2 cups baby kale and baby chard (or greens of choice)

1/2 cup dried cranberries ( or raisins)

1/2 crushed pistachios (or nuts of choice)

crumbled feta to garnish (optional)

Cumin Dressing (below) or dressing of choice

In a large bowl, add the cooked squash. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Add the quinoa, greens, cranberries and pistachios. Toss the salad with the dressing and serve immediately.

Note: This salad will hold up nicely to the dressing, minus the greens. You can always add the salad greens at a later time if you?d like to add the dressing now and allow the flavors to marry. Also a good idea if you?re bringing this to someone house for dinner.

Cumin Dressing

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 tablespoon honey (vegans use agave or sweetener of choice)

In a small frying pan over high heat, add the cumin seeds and toast until fragrant, about 1 minute. Remove from heat. Using a mortar and pestle, grind the cumin seeds. Combine the lemon juice, oil, cumin and honey. Whisk until well combined.

Note: If the salad won?t be eaten all at once, add the dressing to each serving individually to preserve the freshness of the greens.

CP Rail profit falls on restructuring charges

(Reuters) - Canadian Pacific Railway reported a 93 percent fall in fourth-quarter profit as it took charges related to labor restructuring and an impairment, but said it expects 2013 adjusted earnings per share to rise more than 40 percent.

CP, the No. 2 Canadian rail carrier behind Canadian National Railway Co, said it expects 2013 revenue growth in the high single digits and an operating ratio in the low 70s.

Chief Executive Hunter Harrison is pushing to improve the railway's industry-lagging efficiency to the mid-60 percent range in 2016 by slashing costs and exiting poorly performing businesses.

To that end, the railroad veteran is cutting 4,500 of CP's 19,500 jobs by 2016. Harrison was picked by CP's biggest shareholder, Pershing Square Capital Management, to replace Fred Green, who resigned during a bruising proxy battle last year.

CP's operating ratio, a key measure of a railway's productivity, improved to 74.8 percent, excluding items, in the quarter from 78.5 percent a year earlier. The lower the ratio, which calculates operating costs as a percentage of revenue, the more efficient a railway.

Net profit fell to C$15 million ($14.86 million), or 8 Canadian cents per share in fourth quarter from C$221 million, or C$1.30 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 7 percent to C$1.50 billion.

Results were hurt by a C$53 million labor restructuring charge and C$185 million impairment related to its investments in the Powder River Basin in northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana.

Shares of the company, which has a market value of C$19.59 billion, closed at C$112.77 on Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

They have soared more than 45 percent since Green's exit last May, reflecting high hopes for Harrison's turnaround.

Android app offers a super-secret burner phone number

The new Hushed app for Android lets Android owners create disposable, fake, fully functional phone numbers usable in 40 countries on five continents.

Whatever the case, the new Hushed app for Android lets you create disposable phone numbers that you can use in 40 countries.

It's similar to the Burner app for iPhones, except that Hushed transmits calls over data connections rather than over regular phone lines.

Hence, Hushed's creators say the app works in most of western and central Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa, instead of just the U.S. and Canada. (It also apparently works in Bahrain, where the government has spied on dissidents.)

"Hushed is perfect for dating, job searches, short-term projects, Craigslist, Twitter, Tumblr and other social media, and for whenever else you want to be in touch and want to keep it on a private line, or don't want to give out your real number," says the official app description in Google Play.

The Hushed app itself is free, but a U.S. or Canadian number costs starts at 99 cents, and an overseas one starts at $1.99. You'll pay a bit for incoming and outgoing calls as well.

Each number has its own voicemail and, in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, SMS account as well. When the disposable numbers are deleted, so are all voicemails and text messages.

AffinityClick, the Canadian company that makes Hushed, says it's working on a version for iOS.

The company also says Hushed is "private, safe and secure," but doesn't explain how.?

If you're looking for serious encryption for phone calls and text messages, rather than just a burner number, it's probably best to try RedPhone or TextSecure for Android, or Silent Phone and its sibling Silent Text for iOS.
