RAMALLAH, West Bank ? A Palestinian official says the Palestinians have received a boost from the Arab League in their quest to win recognition at the United Nations this fall.
Nabil Abu Rdeneh, a senior aide to President Mahmoud Abbas, says Arab League foreign ministers meeting in Qatar on Thursday endorsed the Palestinian initiative.
With peace talks stalled, the Palestinians have decided to ask the United Nations to endorse an independent Palestinian state in September.
The Palestinians have not yet decided whether they will seek recognition in the powerful Security Council, whose decisions are legally binding, or a symbolic vote in the General Assembly.
Israel opposes the bid and says the Palestinians can gain independence only through a negotiated peace deal.
