BOSTON ? A former Salvadoran military officer accused of colluding in the 1989 deaths of six Jesuit priests has stopped short of pleading guilty to U.S. immigration charges.
Inocente Orlando Montano is charged with lying under oath and making false statements on immigration forms to remain in the U.S. Montano signed a plea agreement in U.S. District Court in Boston on Monday but appeared confused when questioned by the federal judge about whether he understood the implications of a guilty plea.
Montano's lawyer asked for the hearing to end. It was rescheduled for next month.
Montano is among 20 Salvadorans who have been separately indicted in Spain for their alleged roles in the killings. The 69-year-old had been living in the Boston area for years when he was arrested in August.
