Trout not among nine new Gold Glove winners

J.J. Hardy thought he'd hit a home run, only to be robbed when Mike Trout made one of the most sensational grabs of the season.

On Tuesday night, Hardy caught a break.

The Baltimore shortstop won a Gold Glove, putting him among a group of nine players honored for the first time for their fielding excellence.

"It means a lot to me," Hardy said. "It's definitely an award I always hoped to get and never really expected to get. I'm surprised and honored at the same time."

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen, San Diego third baseman Chase Headley and Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick also were first-time selections.

"I'm just happy I can pull it out for them and get the A's name even more out there," Reddick said. "It's a huge honor, I'm always taking pride in both sides of my game and trying to be a complete player. You never know what one play, whether the first or the ninth inning, is going to win a ballgame. That's what my mother and father taught me."

The Orioles were the only team with three winners. Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones and catcher Matt Wieters were second-time choices, joining Hardy for the awards chosen by major league managers and coaches and presented by Rawlings.

Trout, the Angels rookie who spent the year climbing walls to take away potential homers, was not picked. Among his best catches came against Hardy at Camden Yards in June.

The San Francisco Giants, fresh off winning a World Series in which they excelled with their gloves, did not have a Gold Glover.

These were the first major awards presented during the offseason, and the MVPs, Cy Youngs and others will come in mid-November. Gold Gloves always seem to raise a ruckus, with many claiming the prizes - actual gloves colored gold - don't define the most deserving fielders.

Hardy led the AL in fielding percentage, making only six errors in 158 games. Others relying on more advanced metrics and insist Seattle's Brendan Ryan was the best shortstop - then again, even though awards are strictly for fielding, players who don't produce at the plate often get bypassed, and Ryan hit a weak .194. Hardy hit 22 home runs.

"I've always hoped but I never expected it," Hardy said. "It's definitely an award I've seen a lot of shortstops get that are really flashy and kind of catch the eye of a lot of people. I don't look at myself that way. I kind of look at myself as just trying to be consistent and steady. I never felt like people noticed."

Wieters, meanwhile, was chosen despite leading AL catchers with 10 errors. He was recognized for the many things he does well - he threw out 39 percent of would-be basestealers and rarely let pitches get past him.

Strong-armed St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina won for the fifth straight year and Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira added his fifth award. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre, Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins and Miami pitcher Mark Buehrle became four-time winners.

Buehrle won three times with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Marlins last winter.

"With a whole new group of managers voting for you, it wasn't like it was handed to you," Buehrle said. "The Gold Glove gets to be, `He won it last year, give it to him again.' This one means a lot, because switching leagues, it was different managers voting on it. I had to do my job to earn it."

The other first-time winners in the National League were Washington first baseman Adam LaRoche, Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney and Atlanta right fielder Jason Heyward.

"I'm extremely thrilled," Barney said. "It's something you came into the season working toward, but it's not something that I thought the results would be there as quickly as they were. I'm extremely happy about it. There's a lot of good competition out there, obviously, and I'm really surprised that ended up happening for me. So it's an exciting night for me."

In the AL, pitchers Jake Peavy of the White Sox and Jeremy Hellickson shared the honor as first-time winners. This was only the third time since the Gold Gloves were first presented in 1957 that there was a tie - there were four NL outfielders in 2007 and four AL outfielders in 1985.

Also winning this year: Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon and Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Several players were rewarded for their wins.

Beltre received a $100,000 bonus and Hardy got $75,000, Gordon, LaRoche, Molina, Peavy and Rollins each added $50,000; Gonzalez, Jones and McCutchen $25,000 apiece.

In addition, Gordon's salaries for 2014 and 2015 increase by $250,000 a year to $10.25 million and $12.75 million. His 2016 player option also rises by $250,000 to $12.75 million.

Scientists build the first all-carbon solar cell

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Stanford University scientists have built the first solar cell made entirely of carbon, a promising alternative to the expensive materials used in photovoltaic devices today. The results are published in the October 31 online edition of the journal ACS Nano.

"Carbon has the potential to deliver high performance at a low cost," said study senior author Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a working solar cell that has all of the components made of carbon. This study builds on previous work done in our lab."

Unlike rigid silicon solar panels that adorn many rooftops, Stanford's thin film prototype is made of carbon materials that can be coated from solution. "Perhaps in the future we can look at alternative markets where flexible carbon solar cells are coated on the surface of buildings, on windows or on cars to generate electricity," Bao said.

The coating technique also has the potential to reduce manufacturing costs, said Stanford graduate student Michael Vosgueritchian, co-lead author of the study with postdoctoral researcher Marc Ramuz.

"Processing silicon-based solar cells requires a lot of steps," Vosgueritchian explained. "But our entire device can be built using simple coating methods that don't require expensive tools and machines."

Carbon nanomaterials

The Bao group's experimental solar cell consists of a photoactive layer, which absorbs sunlight, sandwiched between two electrodes. In a typical thin film solar cell, the electrodes are made of conductive metals and indium tin oxide (ITO). "Materials like indium are scarce and becoming more expensive as the demand for solar cells, touchscreen panels and other electronic devices grows," Bao said. "Carbon, on the other hand, is low cost and Earth-abundant."

The Bao group's all-carbon solar cell consists of a photoactive layer, which absorbs sunlight, sandwiched between two electrodes.

For the study, Bao and her colleagues replaced the silver and ITO used in conventional electrodes with graphene -- sheets of carbon that are one atom thick -and single-walled carbon nanotubes that are 10,000 times narrower than a human hair. "Carbon nanotubes have extraordinary electrical conductivity and light-absorption properties," Bao said.

For the active layer, the scientists used material made of carbon nanotubes and "buckyballs" -- soccer ball-shaped carbon molecules just one nanometer in diameter. The research team recently filed a patent for the entire device.

"Every component in our solar cell, from top to bottom, is made of carbon materials," Vosgueritchian said. "Other groups have reported making all-carbon solar cells, but they were referring to just the active layer in the middle, not the electrodes."

One drawback of the all-carbon prototype is that it primarily absorbs near-infrared wavelengths of light, contributing to a laboratory efficiency of less than 1 percent -- much lower than commercially available solar cells. "We clearly have a long way to go on efficiency," Bao said. "But with better materials and better processing techniques, we expect that the efficiency will go up quite dramatically."

Improving efficiency

The Stanford team is looking at a variety of ways to improve efficiency. "Roughness can short-circuit the device and make it hard to collect the current," Bao said. "We have to figure out how to make each layer very smooth by stacking the nanomaterials really well."

The researchers are also experimenting with carbon nanomaterials that can absorb more light in a broader range of wavelengths, including the visible spectrum.

"Materials made of carbon are very robust," Bao said. "They remain stable in air temperatures of nearly 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit."

The ability of carbon solar cells to out-perform conventional devices under extreme conditions could overcome the need for greater efficiency, according to Vosgueritchian. "We believe that all-carbon solar cells could be used in extreme environments, such as at high temperatures or at high physical stress," he said. "But obviously we want the highest efficiency possible and are working on ways to improve our device."

"Photovoltaics will definitely be a very important source of power that we will tap into in the future," Bao said. "We have a lot of available sunlight. We've got to figure out some way to use this natural resource that is given to us."

Other authors of the study are Peng Wei of Stanford and Chenggong Wang and Yongli Gao of the University of Rochester Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research was funded by the Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford and the Air Force Office for Scientific Research.

Video: Airports slowly open after Sandy

>> the travel nightmare caused by this storm. text tends well beyond the northeast to airports and train stations all across the country. nbc's tom costello is at rage abe national airport which, by the way, is back in business this morning. tom, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, matt. systemwide another 2,600 flight cancellations today. that brings the total now to about 18,000. behind me though, this airport is bubbling to life. look out the window. we've got a couple of planes on the ramp here which is nice to see. the real problem though remains new york city . we have got newark airport and jfk on limited operations today, and laguardia remains closed. day three of a massive travel nightmare, and so much of it centers on new york city . flooding everywhere. the subway closed. the new jersey/new york p.a.t.h. train under water, and this, the big apple 's three airports all struggling. floodwaters at laguardia were right up to the jet bridges .

>> runways are flooded, and there are no flights leaving or arriving. how much damage was done to the navigation equipment and lighting around them, we don't know yet.

>> reporter: with new york and the northeast accounting for roughly a quarter of all u.s. air traffic every day, hundreds of thousands of travelers are anxious to get home, stranded in san francisco .

>> i was out. gas leaks all over the place, flooding, and i don't know what to expect when i get back? all the way to london.

>> the earlier i would be able to fly to boston is on friday, the 2nd, and that would just be to boston , not even new york .

>> reporter: at airports nationwide it's been three days of travel strategizing.

>> and we're going to have to take a flight to atlanta and a flight from atlanta to phoenix. if not we'll go back to charlotte, charlotte to houston and houston to phoenix.

>> reporter: this is god news, boston , philly, chicago and washington are taking flights, going from deserted ghost towns with no planes and nothing open to a few flickers of activity. at reagan national the first planes pulled in midday tuesday, a welcome site for those trying to get home to alabama.

>> had my flights cancelled all day yesterday and now it looks like delta is going on time today at 4:00. i'm feeling lucky.

>> but the airlines still have many planes parked away from the disaster zone at airports all over the country. not even close to resuming normal operations.

>> i think realistically the system is going to start to get back to normal late weekend, early next week. we certainly have a large backlog of travelers that will need to be rebooked as well as very full flights later this week and into the weekend.

>> reporter: that is not what emily wants it hear. she has pressing business back in phoenix.

>> because i'm going to do halloween in phoenix with my friends.

>> reporter: got to keep your priorities straight. we also need to tell you what's happening with amtrak, serious disruptions along the northeast corridor . let's show you that very quickly. there is, because of new york city 's tunnels being flooded out, there are -- there is no acela express service at all today and probably not tomorrow. no new york city to boston service, no new york city to buffalo, montreal or vermont. the bottom line is if you're trying to go anywhere south from newark, south, in other words, on down to d.c., richmond what have you, you probably have service. if you're trying to go north of newark, you're out of luck. back to you guys.

>> all right. tom costello at reagan national this morning, tom, thanks very much.

Windows 8 demand higher than 7's, says CEO Ballmer

2 hrs.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has a rosy outlook for their new Windows 8 operating system, saying Monday that "we're seeing preliminary demand well above where we were with Windows 7." But other measures indicate that this statement may be somewhat misleading.

Ballmer was speaking at a San Francisco event where Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8?hardware were being showcased. Windows 8 itself officially launched last Friday, but has been available in preview form for more than a year.

Comparing the new OS to its predecessor is natural, but could Windows 8,?which has been intensely polarizing in the tech community, really be more in demand than the incredibly popular Windows 7, which famously fixed what Windows Vista had broken??

To find out, I spoke with?Jay Chou,?senior research analyst at IDC's Worldwide PC Tracker.

While he cautioned that Ballmer may be privy to some statistics not yet publicized, Chou suggested that Windows 8 probably isn't going to move PCs the way Windows 7 did ? but that this has as much to do with the broader PC market as it does with the desirability of the OS.

"Our outlook on Windows 8 is that it will bring somewhat of a boost on the consumer side, but really, its full impact won't be felt till much later. We don't see it as a significant factor that will help the hardware business to recover."

He compared the circumstances of the release to those in 2009, when Windows 7 launched. At the time, millions of consumers and businesses were waiting eagerly for a chance to upgrade, having skipped the poorly?received Windows Vista. Not only that, but netbooks were still selling at high rates, and Windows 7 was a great fit for that type of PC. Windows 7, in other words, arrived just when people wanted to buy into both new hardware and a new operating system.

Now, however, the economy has slowed PC shipments, tablets have replaced netbooks as the best?option for casual computing, and for many people, the upgrade to Windows 7 is still fresh in their minds. Furthermore, Windows 8 isn't a cheap upgrade:

"Cost is a factor," said Chou. "To really take advantage of Windows 8, you need the hardware, the touch capability. You might have to upgrade your mouse or get a multi-touch trackpad."

And while sales of the Surface RT device appear to be fairly brisk, the bulk of consumers running desktops and laptops do not appear to be convinced; Windows 8 likely won't be spiking hardware sales the way its predecessor did.

So how can Ballmer make the statement that demand is higher? The fact is, while sales might not pick up for a year or so, Windows 8 has driven a huge amount of curiosity: the consumer preview of the OS was downloaded more than a million times on the first day.

If Ballmer's statement is interpreted as meaning they've seen unprecedented interest in the OS, then it can be considered factual. But interest does not always translate to sales.?What people could test for free they may not want to pay to own, especially when reviews of the OS are mixed, and?the best experiences rely on new, often costly hardware.

No sales statistics have been released thus far, but it has only been a few days since the official release. Microsoft will be obligated to make some official sales statements soon in order to satisfy investors and build consumer confidence.?We will report any such news, which should appear over the next few weeks.

They ought to have some kind of charm and be aggressive. My summary is usually that whether or not it appears like it may be a rip-off, do your research anyways and it could not be. It just is dependent. Some items are indicators, but in my view internet style and design and challenging offering are usually not immediate symptoms of the rip-off.

Compare Electricity Rates And Know Which Electric Company Offers ...

We people prefer to think that having a reliable power supply at the ready when we need it is something of a normal occurrence yet we fail to comply as happily when it comes with bill payments. Affirmed we most of the time grudgingly pay for our bills yet overlook the fact that the whole month that you were using that electricity at home, it did not falter or fail us. That?s just fact and nothing more. Human beings love to have comforts yet don?t see the consequence of those comforts. If you wish to live life simple, then your worries is going to be simple. If you love to life an existence full of grandeur, like big TV?s, nonstop computer and internet, gadgets galore all over your place, then you should get ready for a much bigger consequence when it comes to paying your bills. Still, before anything gets overboard, why don?t you compare electricity rates, this way you won?t have to deal will too much overspending because you got the lowest rate in town.

What will you choose when you are given a choice? An electrical company that provides you with reliable energy whenever you need, nonstop at Twenty-four hours a day, no rest for your wicked style, or an electric company that offers discount prices yet one that?s not that reliable. Maybe someone overused all electronic gadgets and home appliances for quite a while and the transformer positioned in your block went kaput because it cannot accommodate the high voltage.

Both can be better whichever way you put it, it depends on your needs. The first one will be very commendable if you stay home most of the time, like you are a homebody that actually works online or a bum who lives off someone else?s money and you just play games all day. The 2nd option on the other hand is good for people who do not stay indoors a great deal; like if you work odd hours every day and just goes home to sleep and bathe. You?ll not need to have a 24/7 electric company with that setup and you?ll only squander your hard earned dollars on a reliable power source yet not utilize it.

Think it through and compare electricity rates. Victoria includes a wide array of choices you can select from and don?t hesitate to discover which ones will be advantageous to your needs. It?ll all be your decision in the end so decide well.

Google bumps Android to 4.2, keeps Jelly Bean moniker

Google bumps Android to 42, keeps Jelly Bean moniker

Well, it's no Key Lime Pie, but Android 4.2 is certainly a treat in its own right. The latest version of Google's mobile OS makes a number of evolutionary improvements to its already impressive repertoire -- including a new quick settings menu that can be accessed from the notification pull down and support for multiple user profiles. The multiple user support is especially handy for tablets like the new Nexus 10, which are much more likely to be shared, and now offer quick and easy user switching right from the lock screen. If you don't want to share your tablet, just what's on it, the new support for Miracast makes will allow you to wirelessly beam movies, games or anything else to a compatible display. The 10-inch tablet UI has also received a slight tweak, moving closer to the design for phones and the Nexus 7, with centered navigation buttons and the notification area up top. It might seem strange for users used to the Honeycomb-style tablet layout, but the new design is much simpler and provides a consistent experience across devices.

Google has also overhauled the photo experience and added Photo Sphere -- a 360-degree panoramic shooting mode that captures everything around you. Obviously, you'll be able to post those shots to Google+, but you'll also be able to add them to Google Maps, basically creating your own personal Street View. Interestingly, Google has also taken a page from Swype's playbook, adding "Gesture Typing" to its keyboard. There's also a new screensaver called Daydream that offers up news, photos and other content when a device is docked or idle.

Perhaps the biggest, and creepiest improvements are to Google Now, which can monitor your Gmail for relevant content such as flight numbers. Hotel and restaurant reservations are now presented as cards, as are packages enroute to your humble abode. The service will even remind you of events you've purchased tickets for, essentially making Calendar redundant for a lot of your personal life. For more info check out the source links.

Former Marine Jonathan Brown Fired For Going To ... - AOL Jobs

marine fired disabled veteran

Former Marine Jonathan Brown was discharged from the military about two years ago after injuries to his eyes left him unable to serve. And it's that disability, Brown is claiming in a recently filed lawsuit, that prompted his employer to fire him from the gym that he was managing last summer.

Brown had been employed by New Life Fitness World in Lexington, S.C., for nearly two years when he was called into the office of the newly hired regional manager and was told on July 30 that his employment "wouldn't work out." Brown had just returned from a regular doctor's appointment at a nearby Veterans Affairs hospital, when his boss, Jonathan Moreno, said he had to let Brown go.

"It was kind of a surprise," Brown told WIS-TV in Columbia, S.C. (via WBTV.com). As much of a surprise was the reason noted on his dismissal paperwork (pictured below), which showed Brown was terminated by New Life Fitness World on July 31 for being a "disabled veteran," according to county court filings obtained by the TV station.

Brown said he offered to work nights and weekends to make up for the time taken for doctors' appointments -- something that he'd done with his previous manager -- but Moreno wasn't willing to reconsider his decision. "His mind was made up by the time he was even walking in the building," Brown said.

Brown served in the Marine Corps for six years and was deployed in Iraq, where he operated a 25 mm cannon before being discharged for his eye condition. Its symptoms include blurred vision and shaking in both eyes. Brown said that he wasn't sure whether operating the gun caused his eye condition.

"The VA is just like the military," Brown told WIS. "If you miss an appointment, you might not get another one to actually let them help you with your problem."

Brown's attorney, James Smith, said his client's case is black and white. "[It] is so clear a violation of the [Americans With Disabilities Act], and obviously they need an education," said Smith, also an Iraqi war veteran.

Employers with 15 or more employees are required to make "reasonable accommodations" for employees with disabilities, Smith said. Brown's willingness to make up lost time was fair to both sides, he added. "Those are reasonable accommodations, which must be made by an employer and they just need to understand that," Smith said.

About 25 percent of recent veterans report having a service connected disability, as compared to about 13 percent of all veterans, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Veterans of the conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan also have higher rates of unemployment than veterans as whole -- 19.9 percent, compared to 6.7 among all veterans, according to data for September by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

When confronted with the allegation that he fired Brown because of his disability, Moreno, who has since left New Life Fitness World, called the charge, "horse***t." Moreno told WIS that the reason he fired Brown was because of customer service complaints, and for failing to keep the gym clean and meet his sales goals.

But Jody Parks, Brown's previous manager, said Brown was "a great guy [and a] good employee." Brown's final paycheck shows the gym paid him $150 in bonuses for meeting production, sales and membership goals.

Parks confirmed that he and Brown had worked out an arrangement that allowed the veteran to make up the time that he spent in doctors appointments. "He was able to basically come back in and make up the time that he had missed. It was fair on that level," Parks said.

An attorney for the gym, Tobias Ward, told WIS that the reason for Brown's termination "is hotly contested,' adding that "management vigorously disputes the reason for termination given by Jonathan Brown in his lawsuit."

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story quoted Ciye Malcuit, who both Moreno and Brown identified as the owner of New Life Fitness World, according to WIS. Malcuit says he isn't the owner of the business. Rather, he is the general manager of the fitness chain's gym in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Business investment stalls as "fiscal cliff" looms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Business investment showed signs of stalling in September, an indication that worries over a possible sharp tightening in the federal budget are already weighing on the economy.

Other data on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, a fresh sign the labor market is slowly healing.

New orders for capital goods outside of defense and excluding aircraft -- a proxy for business spending plans -- was unchanged last month at $60.3 billion, Commerce Department data showed. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a modest gain.

The reading highlighted concerns that companies are holding back investments due to fears the U.S. Congress could fail to avert sharp tax hikes and spending cuts in 2013, which threaten to send the country back into recession.

"The slowdown in business fixed investment during the second half of the year is even more pronounced than feared," said Harm Bandholz, an economist at UniCredit in New York.

Shipments of non-defense capital goods other than aircraft, which go into the government's estimates for economic growth, fell for the third straight month. As a result, JPMorgan lowered its estimate for third-quarter economic growth by two tenths of a point to a 1.6 percent annual rate.

The investment readings were part of a larger report that showed orders for long-lasting factory goods last month posted their biggest gain since January 2010. However, the rise was fueled by a spike in volatile aircraft orders and failed to make up ground lost in August.

Manufacturing has been a major driver of the recovery from America's 2007-09 recession, but now is beset by softer demand at home and abroad. The European debt crisis has suppressed orders at factories around the world, from China to the United States and Latin America.

ORDERS SOFT OUTSIDE OF TRANSPORTATION

The U.S. economy remains hobbled by a persistently high jobless rate. Incomes have stagnated and many families are awash in debts taken on during a housing bubble in the last decade.

Recently, however, the economy has shown a few positive signals, with the unemployment rate falling to 7.8 percent and retail sales picking up. Consumer spirits also have brightened.

Those signs of improvement appear to have done little to bolster President Barack Obama's bid for a second term, and there is only one more reading on U.S. unemployment before the November 6 election.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday warned about the weakness in business investment, which has contrasted with brighter economic signals from household spending.

Even though businesses are ratcheting back spending plans, the factory sector still appears to be expanding slowly.

New orders for durable goods -- items like toasters and refrigerators that are meant to last three years or more -- rose a higher-than-expected 9.9 percent, partially reversing August's sharp loss.

Excluding transportation, orders rose a more modest 2 percent. Boeing received 143 orders in September, up from just one in August, according to information on the plane maker's website.

CLEARER READ

Separately, the Labor Department said initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 23,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 369,000.

A Labor Department analyst said all states submitted data for the report and that there was nothing unusual in the raw data. The analyst said the data showed no signs of the factors that had appeared to generate sharp swings in the claims reading over the prior two weeks.

The four-week moving average for jobless claims, which smoothes out such volatility, rose 1,500 to a 368,000. Economists generally think a reading below 400,000 points to an increase in employment, with hiring likely outpacing layoffs.

The report gave investors a clearer picture that the labor market is slowly healing after the big fluctuations in the claims data earlier in the month.

U.S. stock prices rose, helped by a report that pointed to a pickup in Chinese factory output during the last three months of the year. Prices for U.S. government debt pared losses following the U.S. data.

A third report on Thursday showed contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes rose far less than expected in September, although the data continued to point to an improving tone in the housing market.

The National Association of Realtors said its Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed in September, gained 0.3 percent to 99.5.

The Pitter Patter Of Rain Might Reveal a Bridge's Structural Integrity

Closing down a busy bridge for safety inspections is difficult because it can lead to traffic nightmares on either side. But at the same time, the last thing engineers want is for it to collapse with vehicles on deck. So a team of researchers has come up with a novel way to test a concrete bridge's structural integrity by simply listening to the sound of rain drops. More »

Zynga cuts 5 percent of work force, ending 13 games

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc laid off 5 percent of its full-time workforce and shut its Boston office on Tuesday as it embarked on a sweeping cost-cutting campaign that may eventually see the "FarmVille" game creator close its Japanese and British studios as well.

The company, which is trying to arrest a steep decline in earnings as users gradually migrate onto mobile devices or rival games, plans to "sunset" 13 unspecified older titles, Chief Executive Mark Pincus said in a staff memo on Tuesday that was published on the company blog.

"This is the most painful part of an overall cost reduction plan that also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and outside services, primarily contractors," Pincus wrote in his memo.

Pincus said the cuts would accompany a regime of "more stringent budget and resource allocation around new games and partner projects," hinting at a fundamental change for a company that was known for expanding aggressively through hires and acquisition deals before it went public to fanfare last December.

In March, Pincus made a gamble to acquire game studio OMGPOP for $180 million before acknowledging this month that the deal didn't pan out, leading to a $90 million writedown.

The memo came on the eve of Zynga's earnings report on Wednesday, when Pincus and Chief Financial Officer David Wehner are expected to provide Wall Street with more comprehensive details about the company's overhaul strategy.

Tuesday's cuts were presaged on October 4, when Zynga slashed its 2012 outlook and warned investors that it would record a steep drop in sequential quarterly revenues for the first time since its December initial public offering. At the time, Pincus said the company would examine how to proceed with cuts.

As the first step of Zynga's reduction plan unfolded Tuesday, Pincus said that Zynga would significantly pull back its investment in "The Ville" game - a major recent initiative - and scale back on its Austin, Texas studio as it sought to cut costs. He also said the company was "proposing" to close its Japanese and British offices.

Rumors of the layoffs in Austin and Boston had spread on gaming blogs and over social networks during the day, and the company's shares closed down more than 5 percent, at $2.20. But they bounced back 4.5 percent to $2.30 in after-hours trade, following news of the cost-cutting initiatives.

"It's good to see them be realistic, but the real question is not a matter of profitability, it's 'can you get revenue going the right direction?'" said Ben Schachter, a senior analyst at Macquarie Securities. "The Street doesn't want to see cost-cutting for what was supposed to be a growth company."

Pincus, who grew the company behind such ageing Facebook hits as "CityVille" "and Mafia Wars", will face employees at a quarterly gathering next week at the company's San Francisco headquarters.

Employees say morale is in steep decline, with Zynga forced this month to slash its 2012 results outlook for the second time.

Since going public at $10 a share, Zynga has lost over three-quarters of its market value. It has been hit by delays in its game pipeline as older titles fade, while it has struggled to come up with new hits for mobile devices.

Tuesday's layoffs amounted to roughly 150 out of Zynga's 2,900 workers.

Pincus said on Wednesday the company's management did not make the decision to cut employees "lightly" and that it recognized the "impact to our colleagues and friends."

But with the company's top line stagnant, analysts warned they expected news of further cuts on Wednesday's earnings call.

"They probably need to cut more people, and they probably will," said Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities.

First Time Buyers - Zillow Real Estate Advice

To user 0985550 - there are many different types of loans available.? Some are based on the geographic area you are buying in (such as a USDA rural loan), some? on how much money you have saved for a downpayment (an FHA loan requires less money down then a conventional loan), some on the type of home you are purchasing and whether it will need work or not (a rehab loan may be your best bet if you are buying a fixer-upper) or if you are buying a foreclosure, the bank or governmental agency that is selling it may have some special loans available to you. If you are a veteran, you should use a VA loan. You may also be eligible for local state and county financing.

Where to start?? Typically I recommend finding a good LOCAL mortgage lender. A bank or credit union will typically only loan their own money and will have a more limited portfolio of loans available. A mortgage banker broker will be able to loan money from the bank that he works for AND he will be able to shop the other lenders to see if one has a better program for you then he has. A mortgage broker doesn't lend his own banks money, but he shops banks and other lending institutions for a loan for you.? If you expect to be using any first time homebuyer grant monies, then you will need to check with the agency handling those funds since only certain lenders are typically authorized to issue them.

How to find a good LOCAL lender - you may want to start by talking to friends who have purchased a home recently, or your bank or credit union. An excellent source for a referral to a good lender is your Realtor.? They will want you to use a local reputable lender since they know that will get you to a much smoother closing.

A good lender will give you alternatives - he or she will go over the programs that you are eligible for and will help you to determine which program is the best fit for your needs.? He'll discuss with you if a 15 or 20 or 30 yr loan would be your best alternative based on how long you intend to be in the home and how you expect your income to change over that time.

One thing I always recommend is that you ask the lender to run the numbers 2 ways - the standard way is how much buying power do I have based on my credit rating, debt to income ratio and overall financial picture. That way you know how much you can afford if the right home pops up. I typically do not recommend that anyone buy at the top of their price point - people who do have a tendency to be house poor.? When all your money is going toward your house payments and you don't have money to go out to eat or to a movie or to socialize with friends, you will end up hating your home.? As a result, I tell buyers to ask their lender to run the numbers a second way - tell the lender how much you want to spend each month on your house payments and ask them to run the numbers in reverse and tell you what price point of a home you should be looking at.

Good luck

Source: Dr. Alpa Patel, epidemiologist for the American Cancer Society

"It's never been a 'Why me?' It's been, 'What am I supposed to change or do?'" she said. "This might sound small, but I think if I can save one person from going through what I've gone through, that will make going through my cancer all worth it. That's what gives me the passion."

Over the next week or so, the American Cancer Society hopes to enroll 500 Orange County adults who have never had cancer for the Cancer Prevention Study, which will last up to 30 years.

It's the third round of a project that started in 1959 and has followed 2.2 million Americans, said Dr. Alpa Patel, an epidemiologist overseeing the study from Atlanta.

Participants must enroll at one of three locations, in Fullerton, Santa Ana or Mission Viejo. A blood sample will be taken as well as a measurement of waist circumference. The process takes about 20 minutes. After filling out an initial health history, participants will respond to surveys every two or three years for the next 20 to 30 years.

"As long as individuals continue to return questionnaires, we will continue to follow them," Patel said. "This type of resource becomes richer with time."

The study aims to enroll at least 300,000 Americans by the end of next year. Questions will cover topics such as diet, lifestyle and weight. All information is kept confidential. For participants who develop cancer, researchers will track their disease and review medical records.

Patel said past research from the study conclusively linked smoking with lung cancer, as well as obesity as a risk factor for developing cancer. She said findings from the first two phases have been published more than 500 times in medical journals.

Patel said she met a volunteer from the original study, now in her 90s, who recalled the days when cancer was a shameful word spoken only in whispers.

"I look from that time to today and the progress we've made," Patel said. "Ways we can make choices in our own lifestyle and own behaviors. We've learned those types of things because two generations of Americans have paid it forward for us to learn those lessons. It is creating a world with a possibility of a lesser burden of cancer for our children's generation than what we have today."

Rune was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. After she underwent a hysterectomy, the cancer spread to her abdomen, and she said she was told she wouldn't live to see 2013.

Rune, an accountant at Hyundai, opted for surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. She'll resume chemo shortly.

"Right now I'm pretty much cancer-free," she said. "I knew it wasn't my time. Now the doctor says instead of this December, I get three more years."

Rune said she's determined to live longer. She said she hopes people will enroll in the study so they can help researchers learn more about what causes cancer.

"It's a huge contribution," she said. "It's so historical. It's such a monumental study."

'Price Is Right' Model Brandi Cochran Fired For ... - AOL Jobs

Brandi Cochran fired Price Is Right

Officially, it's illegal for employers to discriminate against pregnant workers, but in practice, pregnancy discrimination is common, according to the Employment Opportunity Commission statistics. Brandi Cochran, a model on "The Price Is Right" game show from 2002 to 2008, claims that she is part of this trend, saying that she was illegally fired and subjected to insults after she became pregnant.

One incident that Cochran (pictured above) recalled was when she walked past a "Price Is Right" producer, who proceeded to remark, "wide load coming through." The model's civil lawsuit finally went to trial in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday. (The complaint does not specify the amount of damages Cochran is seeking.)

According to Cochran, her employer showed hostility to her pregnancy when she had an earlier pregnancy, from which she miscarried in 2007. A "Price Is Right "producer told her "it's nature's way of getting rid of a bad baby," according to TMZ.

When she got pregnant the following year, and miscarried, she went on disability leave for post-partum depression. After producers began dropping off in requesting appearances from her, they eventually told her she was being terminated, according to the Law360 website, which reports on business law.

More: Top 10 Jobs Of The 21st Century

"The producers couldn't sell her pregnancy, they couldn't sell her disability, and she couldn't be exploited, so they fired her," her attorney James Urbanic said during opening arguments.

Cochran's suit was filed back in 2010 against CBS Corp., FremantleMedia Ltd., and The Price is Right Productions Inc. Superior Court Judge Kevin Brazile dropped CBS from the suit back in September, citing the television network's lack of involvement in staffing decisions for the show.

In presenting his client's case, Urbanic said that after Cochran announced her first pregnancy, the producers drastically reduced the model's appearances on "The Price Is Right."

FremantleMedia attorney Kate Gold, said Cochran's firing had nothing to do with her pregnancy. Gold said that when Bob Barker left as the game show's host in 2007, and Drew Carey became the new host, it began using fewer models and chose models that could adapt to Carey's "improvisational style."

Moreover, Gold said the show's producers didn't even know about Cochran's depression, and even if they had, the producers would not consider it a problem. After all, the show's new host had a widely cited public record of talking about his own depression and history of suicide attempts.

The suit, which is expected to wrap up in three or four weeks, is the latest in a line of lawsuits involving "The Price is Right" and its models. According to a report by Time magazine, the lawsuits that have gone for decades depict "an institutionalized attitude that allowed executives to treat models on the show (and female staffers) as second-class citizens."

Perhaps the most famous suit came from show model Dian Parkinson, who sued the "The Price Is Right" back in 1994 for $8 million, claiming that she had been forced to have sex with Barker to keep her job. Barker denied that, but he did eventually say that he and Parkinson had a consensual relationship. While the judge dismissed the wrongful termination part of the suit, it was Parkinson who decided not to pursue the sexual harassment charge, citing insufficient funds.

More: 7 Part-Time Jobs That Pay Up To $40 An Hour

One former model who had better luck was Holly Hallstrom, who was let go from "The Price Is Right" in 1995. Her termination led to a series of lawsuits and countersuits, in which she claimed she was dismissed for both gaining 14 pounds and not helping Barker to fight back against the charges being made by Parkinson. The parties eventually settled out of court, with Hallstrom walking away with a multimillion dollar award.

While Carey has not yet been ensnared in any of the suits, the string of litigation has continued into his reign as host. Just last year, former show model Lanisha Cole filed a lawsuit citing wrongful termination against "The Price Is Right." Cole says her treatment on the show changed dramatically in 2009 when one of the producers began to skip over her in favor of another model with whom he was having a relationship. The producer, named Adam Sandler (no relation to the comedian), also allegedly would burst into Cole's dressing room without knocking, castigating her for not wearing her microphone on set.

Cole's case, like Cochran's, is still in the courts.

NFL: Washington Redskins' Robert Griffin III already causing a sensation

Washington Redskinsrookie quarterback Robert Griffin III already has opponents shaking their heads about his future. "That guy is the real deal," the New York Giants' Justin Tuck said. (Kathy Willens / Associated Press)

The New York Giants are lauding what Robert Griffin III can do now, and they're worried what he will do to them in the future.

They got a close-up look Sunday at what's in store, and it was downright scary for the Super Bowl champions.

"I'm not even going to lie. That's the best quarterback we've played this year, for sure," defensive end Osi Umenyiora said after Griffin did everything but beat his team. "It's just unfortunate that he's a rookie because he's going to be around here forever doing stuff like that. That's just crazy."

The excitement Griffin brings for the Redskins is unmatched in the NFL. The skill set might be, too.

It's something the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles will be dealing with for a long time.

"I'm pretty mad at the football gods for putting him in the NFC East," Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said. "To face that guy twice a year is going to be a headache. It's hard to game-plan that guy. He takes away from your enthusiasm for the game when you play a play perfectly and he still has 4.3 speed to make plays.

"I don't think there is anybody in the league just like him. If I was going to run an offense and they asked me Vick, Cam Newton or RG3, I'm taking that guy hands down."

Hands were up everywhere from those willing to praise Griffin, the second overall pick in this year's draft behind Andrew Luck.

"We know offensively we can do anything with the ball in his hands," Moss said.

"We've just got to try when we get the opportunities to make sure the guy who can make plays has the ball in his hands. He's giving you a chance to get open. Even when it's hard, he gives you opportunities and there are not many quarterbacks who can do that."

Griffin is matter-of-fact in answering questions about his transcendent talents. Asked about his remarkable fourth-quarter scramble on fourth-and-10 that eventually ended with a 19-yard completion that set up the go-ahead touchdown pass to Moss, he simply recounted the play as if it happens all the time.

With Griffin, at some point it just might.

"I try not to approach the game like I'm a rookie," he said. "I don't try to give myself excuses. I just don't approach it that way and the team doesn't look at me like a rookie, either. I'm their leader. I'm their quarterback, so I can't go out there and say, well if I make a mistake it's because I'm a rookie. I have to hold myself accountable for everything. I think that's why I'm able to go out and be successful."

One caveat, of course, is the vulnerability that accompanies Griffin's style of play. He already had a concussion against Atlanta when he didn't slide at the end of a run, although he returned for the next game.

Coach Mike Shanahan knows what he has in Griffin and isn't about to pull the reins on his thoroughbred.

"That guy," Tuck said, "is the real deal."

New analysis provides fuller picture of human expansion from Africa

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

A new, comprehensive review of humans' anthropological and genetic records gives the most up-to-date story of the "Out of Africa" expansion that occurred about 45,000 to 60,000 years ago.

This expansion, detailed by three Stanford geneticists, had a dramatic effect on human genetic diversity, which persists in present-day populations. As a small group of modern humans migrated out of Africa into Eurasia and the Americas, their genetic diversity was substantially reduced.

In studying these migrations, genomic projects haven't fully taken into account the rich archaeological and anthropological data available, and vice versa. This review integrates both sides of the story and provides a foundation that could lead to better understanding of ancient humans and, possibly, genomic and medical advances.

"People are doing amazing genome sequencing, but they don't always understand human demographic history" that can help inform an investigation, said review co-author Brenna Henn, a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at the Stanford School of Medicine who has a PhD in anthropology from Stanford. "We wanted to write this as a primer on pre-human history for people who are not anthropologists."

This model of the Out of Africa expansion provides the framework for testing other anthropological and genetic models, Henn said, and will allow researchers to constrain various parameters on computer simulations, which will ultimately improve their accuracy.

"The basic notion is that all of these disciplines have to be considered simultaneously when thinking about movements of ancient populations," said Marcus Feldman, a professor of biology at Stanford and the senior author of the paper. "What we're proposing is a story that has potential to explain any of the fossil record that subsequently becomes available, and to be able to tell what was the size of the population in that place at that time."

The anthropological information can inform geneticists when they investigate certain genetic changes that emerge over time. For example, geneticists have found that genes for lactose intolerance and gluten sensitivity began to emerge in populations expanding into Europe around 10,000 years ago.

The anthropological record helps explain this: It was around this time that humans embraced agriculture, including milk and wheat production. The populations that prospered ? and thus those who survived to pass on these mutations ? were those who embraced these unnatural food sources. This, said Feldman, is an example of how human movements drove a new form of natural selection.

Populations that expand from a small founding group can also exhibit reduced genetic diversity ? known as a "bottleneck" ? a classic example being the Ashkenazi Jewish population, which has a fairly large number of genetic diseases that can be attributed to its small number of founders. When this small group moved from the Rhineland to Eastern Europe, reproduction occurred mainly within the group, eventually leading to situations in which mothers and fathers were related. This meant that offspring often received the same deleterious gene from each parent and, as this process continued, ultimately resulted in a population in which certain diseases and cancers are more prevalent.

"If you know something about the demographic history of populations, you may be able to learn something about the reasons why a group today has a certain genetic abnormality ? either good or bad," Feldman said. "That's one of the reasons why in our work we focus on the importance of migration and history of mixing in human populations. It helps you assess the kinds of things you might be looking for in a first clinical assessment. It doesn't have the immediacy of prescribing chemotherapy ? it's a more general look at what's the status of human variability in DNA, and how might that inform a clinician."
