Three Hollywood executives might be regretting their decision not to sell their racehorse for a $1 million when they had the chance, after it hurt an ankle and finished last in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
That?s not to say the horse, Comma to the Top, didn?t give its owners and everyone else who bet on it a thrill, as it came out first, led for a little and looked like he had a shot at an upset victory until the last quarter mile of the race before fading fast.
Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, who head the restructured MGM, along with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment chief Kevin Tsujihara, own Comma to the Top. After the race, trainer Peter Miller told the Daily Racing Form, ?It appears my horse chipped his left ankle.?
The video makes it clear something went awry, or that Comma to the Top just lacks stamina.
Barber is a long-timer in the horseracing game, while Birnbaum and Tsujihara are newcomers. The trio paid $21,000 for Comma to the Top two years ago and insiders say they have recently turned down offers of $1 million to sell their gelding. The horse has won six races in his career, earning $778,000 for its team.
The horse went off as a 35-1 shot on Saturday in front of 164,858, a Churchill Downs attendance record. Animal Kingdom, a 20-1 shot, won the 1437th running of the Kentucky Derby, while Nehro was second and Mucho Macho Man took third. Comma to the Top was 19th in a field of 19 after one horse scratched.
