Transitioning From Summertime Fun to Back to School Routines

Nicole Alston

We all know what a difficult transition it can be from having lots of fun in the summer and waking up at noon to working hard on homework and waking up very early in the morning for the school day. Here are just a few tips to make this transition easier.

Set your alarm clock at night (and make sure you have a second alarm set).? Remember to set your alarm clock at night. Many people wake up late simply because they have forgotten to click that button on their bedside clock OR tap the screen on their smart phones. Also, remember to set an alternate time no more than 10 minutes from your original wake up time. This eliminates the risk of hitting that OFF button and turning the alarm off.

Pack your bags with all materials you need for the next day before you go to bed.? Use your time at night wisely by thinking about ALL the materials you need for the next day. It is hard to think coherently in the morning without forgetting something because your brain hasn?t had enough time to process. Also, because everything is stored in one place, there will be no anxiety stemming from searching frantically for books, pens, homework, IDs, etc.

Prepare your outfits (professional attire or uniforms) at night.? Iron and lay out clothes at night for the next day. It takes so much time to coordinate an outfit, especially for young ladies. Often times, as young women, we have to match up the right colors, make sure our clothes fit correctly, and choose the perfect shoes to compliment our outfit. Use your time at night to work through all the kinks. Again, this frees your precious morning time.

Establish a daily morning routine before you begin the school or work day.? Create a routine starting from the time your alarm clock rings until the time you leave the house. Schedule time to shower and address personal hygiene issues. Be sure to make time for health and fitness as well, perhaps by scheduling an early morning workout and most importantly, eating a balanced, healthy breakfast.? Never forget time for daily meditation and prayer. Reflection can be a very useful tool to prepare your mind, body, and spirit for the upcoming day.

Begin each day with a positive attitude.Yesterday?s trials are history. Start each day with a positive attitude. Prepare yourself mentally for the long day ahead by feeding yourself with positive affirmations. You are MORE than capable of facing your challenges and overcoming your obstacles.

Have a positive and productive school year young ladies!
