Module 2 response to readings ? Technical Writing

In Module 2?s reading, Markel?s proposed ethical model (combination of Kant and Rawls) is further expounded on. This model can be clearly identified in everyday life, including in this years presidential election. However, another example of this ethical model can be used in the situation of a job interview. You come in, resume in hand and all the hope and qualifications to have a successful job interview. When the manager (and other staff), come in to give you your evaluation they look over your resume and ask one simple question, ?Can you speak at least one other language fluently?? Although you know you can only speak French moderately you pondered on whether or not to lie to seal your job offer, or simply tell the truth and hope for the best.

According to Markel?s ethical ?model it would be unethical to lie to the employer about your given language skills. Think of it this way, if you were to tell them yes, and you happened to have the exact language needed to carry out an important meeting that could help the company land a major deal with another profitable customer, how badly would you feel when you got to the meeting and found you didn?t understand everything they were saying to you, and even worst the likelihood that you would no longer have a job at the conclusion of the meeting. The temporary satisfaction (landing a job), could quickly turn to having a negative outcome (you lied and therefore lost your job in the end).

This also leads into Hale?s article in relation to the policymakers social and ethical stances. I definitely agree with Hale?s support in the use of Rawl?s position. In the case of Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney and their views concerning financing for education (as the image clearly shows). Although Romney makes it clear that he lives in the ?higher? or more privileged class to be able to readily afford for education for his children he shows no regard for families that do not have such financial stability. On the opposing side, Obama gives consideration for families who may not have as much to be able to provide for their child?s higher education but still aspire for their child to have more and a greater chance at success than they may have had. This served as a great example of Rawl?s principles and ideals in current society and just how much such views have an affect on the majority and not just an isolated group of people.

I found both articles to share interesting insight into a totally different view point that I myself have often overlooked. Even though I may have finances now doesn?t mean I always will and even then that it would be passed along to my children and other family. In the end things happen everyday that can quickly change our lives from comfortable to lavish or comfortable to struggling and barely making it. Regardless, we have to look past today and look toward tomorrow where literally, anything can happen.
