At least 28 dead in Southern Sudan bus crash (AP)

KAMPALA, Uganda ? Ugandan police say at least 28 people died in a bus collision in Southern Sudan.

Northern Uganda police spokesman Johnson Kirama says two buses hit each other head on about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Uganda's border in Southern Sudan on Friday. He says 17 Ugandans and 11 Sudanese were among the dead, and more than 20 people were rushed to a hospital near the border.

Kirama says that the buses collided because the bus driving from Uganda to Southern Sudan was on the left side of the road, as is the law in Uganda, but in Southern Sudan, vehicles are to drive on the right side.

Police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba said that Ugandan police officers rushed to the scene of Friday's morning accident.

According to Ugandan police at least 2,000 people die from road accidents every year.
