Orlando, Fla. ? The groundbreaking for the new performing arts center in downtown Orlando has been announced and the community support for the center has turned the event into a three-day celebration. The three-day event for the Dr. Phillips Arts Center will begin with the groundbreaking on June 23 from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. Two additional community open house celebrations will take place June 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and June 25 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. where local performing artists and groups will be showcased. Center officials said the announcement of the groundbreaking brought overwhelming community support from local business, corporations, organizations, groups and individuals who have made many donations to support a groundbreaking event. Entertainment for the event will include an appearance by singer and actor Davis Gaines. Gaines is an Orlando native and Edgewater High School alumnus who is noted for his performances in thee Phantom of the Opera productions and many other Broadway productions. Gains was recently inducted into the Edgewater High School?s inaugural Hall of Fame and also serves as a member of the Dr. Phillips Center board of directors. Other entertainment for the three-day celebration includes performances from the Orlando Ballet, Orlando Ballet School, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orlando Repertory Theatre and the cast of the national tour of the Tony Award-winning revival of HAIR. Jim Pugh, the Dr. Phillips Center Board Chairman, said some people have waited 20 years for this center and the three-day event will celebrate the accomplishment of many people who worked hard to get the center built. ?This three-day celebration aligns with our mission of community outreach and is the beginning of establishing a new legacy for the performing arts. This occasion is the realization of the vision and perseverance of our board, Mayor Dyer, the Orlando City Council, and our donors.
