Country Should Better Educate Students on Finances, Fiscal Responsibility (ContributorNetwork)

In advance of President Barack Obama's upcoming speech on jobs and unemployment, Yahoo! News asked its readers and contributors to tell us what subjects they'd like to hear Obama address. Below is a first-person perspective from a reader.

[Your Voice: Sign up with the Yahoo! Contributor Network to share your thoughts.]

FIRST PERSON | This is an exciting and terrifying time for me. I'm currently heading into my final year of college and, to be honest, I'm not at all sure what to expect when I'm finished.

When it comes to exactly what I want to hear from President Obama when he delivers his speech, it's difficult to give a short and direct answer. I'm simply frustrated with just about anything related to politics at this point, and I'm not sure that anything he could say would make me feel significantly better about anything happening to the country. I watched all summer long as Congress did virtually nothing. I was frustrated. Just about everyone I talked to was also frustrated.

I think the very best thing we could hear from Obama is not a promise to the nation or a demand from Congress. Instead, we need to hear an admission the politicians are simply not the people we should hope will clean up America's mess. While the president, the Senate, and the Congress all certainly have great influence over what will happen in America's future, the people that make up the nation are the ones that truly control its destiny. We simply need reform and education.

I'm a 21-year-old from Syracuse, N.Y., and I currently work as a tutor for my college. During the summers in college, I've had another job in food service as well. I don't really make much money. This isn't a bad thing nor is it at all unrealistic, since I have not yet acquired enough skill to be considered for a better-paying position. Still, the one thing I've noticed in my working life more than anything else is the desire to use money correctly without the knowledge about how this is done. I feel absurdly lucky that I was brought up by an accountant.

So, if I want anything from President Obama, this is it: I would love to see more education in schools about money and the economy. We always fear what we do not know, and if we learn about how to spend money and how our economy works, I firmly believe we will no longer fear it. With less fear comes a greater sense of unity, and unity is what this country desperately, desperately needs.

I want him to inspire us. I want him to tell us the truth. I want him to make us feel like we've got at least a morsel of power to do something for the better. We're all sitting around feeling frustrated and powerless as we watch Congress bicker over things we have no say in. We want this to change, and we want it now.

Do Bad Credit Car Finance Have Got A ... - Credit and Loan Tips

The answer is Yes. Individuals with low credit score motor finance continue to have the chance to be backed in their upcoming car purchase. Yet, as a way for banks to approve the automobile loan application, the applicants must anticipate that a bad credit history can continue to result in further analysis or additional requirements.

What You Should Expect From The Financial institutions
? The loaners may investigate the income that the applicants have, consequently requiring them to supply a proof of income, possibly bank statements or the most current tax returns. These are simply a number of the documents that can help validate the claim of the individual.
? Usually, when lenders evaluate an applicant?s credit history, and it is not as good, they will likely need a collateral as a way to push through with the plan for car financing. However with the unhealthy credit car financing, the financing can be done even without any collateral. But theinterest rates can increase higher because of the lack of collateral in spite of a bad credit background.

The interest charge for this type of car financing definitely depends upon the kind of car, the credit track record or credit rating as well as, the span of time the loan will be.

For people who are thinking of buying another car but has got a not-so-good credit history, it is always advisable to speak with a broker on what things can be carried out. Yes, it is always possible to buy that car that you truly want in spite of your bad credit standing. But you basically need to make the appropriate choices and also the right actions.

Best Kayaking Destinations Along the Florida Panhandle | Suite101 ...

Paddlers Cool Off on Econfina Creek - Beverly Hill
Paddlers Cool Off on Econfina Creek - Beverly Hill

A visit to Florida's Emerald Coast isn't complete without a float trip on the inland waterways. Maximize your vacation with these top paddling destinations.

The mention of Florida's Emerald Coast naturally conjures images of glistening white sand beaches and emerald green waters, but a short distance inland lies a network of rivers and creeks that explore an equally enchanting world just waiting to be discovered. Paddlers on these waterways will find clear spring-fed waters, wildlife and amazing hidden views that many people never get to experience.

Paddling in Santa Rosa County

Just north of the coastal town of Navarre and near Milton in Santa Rosa County is a triple-threat paddling destination consisting of Blackwater River, Coldwater Creek and Juniper Creek. Currently two outfitters, Adventures Unlimited and Bob's Canoe Rentals, provide kayak, canoe & tube rentals to this area allowing paddlers to spend half-day, full day or multi-day trips on these waterways.

Blackwater River and Juniper Creek consists of a shifting-sand bottom with numerous white sandbars lining the banks where visitors can enjoy picnic lunches and even camping. Coldwater Creek consists more of a fine gravel. In addition to wilderness camping, nearby Blackwater River State Park and Coldwater Creek Recreation Area also offers camping for a nominal fee.

Okaloosa County Kayaking Destinations

Near the City of Niceville paddlers with their own vessels and an Eglin recreation pass can explore Turkey Creek from its beginnings on the Eglin Reservation to its terminus at Niceville and Boggy Bayou. This narrow, twisting spring-fed creek takes paddlers past pine forests, swamps, the remnants of the old Eglin railroad and the Turkey Creek boardwalk.

North of Crestview paddlers can enjoy a relaxing float trip on the Shoal River by putting in at the Ray Lynn Barnes boat launch on Hwy 90 and floating almost 10 miles to Hwy 85 just below the city to take out at Shoal River Wayside Park. Paddlers wishing to continue downstream to the Yellow River will need to obtain an Eglin recreation pass.

Kayaking in Walton County

In addition to numerous coastal dune lakes to explore, paddlers will want to head north of Panama City to explore Econfina Creek and its numerous spring runs. Econfina Creek Canoe Livery is located just off of Hwy 20 along the banks of the creek. For a nominal fee the livery provides kayak and canoe rentals as well as shuttle services. This easy paddle reveals several large springs to spend time at before heading for the takeout at Hwy 20.

When visiting the Florida panhandle plan for an extra day or two to explore the inland waterways. Some of the Emerald Coast's best kept secrets are just a creek bend away and will provide memories for a lifetime.

The Arts Festival will sponsor an on line auction with proceeds to benefit the Center. There will be live music by local musicians as well as a Wine Country, Market and Beer Garden offering local fare.

Don?t forget about 2010 Imagine Nation. This year?s theme will be Family Time and Family Fun paying homage to the diversity of the American family! An interactive set up will be enjoyed by the whole family with storytelling and comedy dispersed generously among a wide range of activities reminding us that it doesn?t take a boat load of money to have a good time!

The 2010/2011 Performance Calendar is packed with exciting entertainment including Dine Out with The Chefs now in its fifth year. Here?s your chance to rub elbows with some of our Top Chefs, sample their creations and enjoy live entertainment.

Steve Martin is coming to town October 10th with a Bluegrass band to perform mostly musical ditties with great aplomb, sprinkled with his one of a kind humor. I have always enjoyed Steve Martin, from Saturday night live performance of ?King Tut? to his many great films including my personal favorite ?Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?.?

Next we get a visit from the amazing John Lithgow. Loved him in Third Rock and most recently Dexter as a sinister serial killer that kept even Dexter in awe of his level of proficiency with his craft! I can?t forget to acknowledge Life according to Garp and Shrek as part of John Lithgow?s repertoire! On October 21st John will be on stage performing his one man show ?Stories by Heart? switching up our emotions from one minute to the next with his enthralling style.

Musical Guests will include the legendary Doc Severinsen who has trumpeted his way through an extraordinary career touring with such greats as Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman?s bands. He has also worked with Phoenix Symphony and we all know him best as Johnny Carson?s favorite musical sidekick!

Bernadette Peters will grace the stage in November with her flowing veil of ringlets to perform songs from her ?Face of Broadway? show.? A brilliant cross between Barbara Streisand and Bette Midler, Miss Peters will light up the stage with her designer gowns and sultry style!

Political farce and folly anyone? The Capitol Steps will be performing their sharp tongued satire leaving no one safe regardless of affiliations, and no stone unturned when it comes to amusing the masses at the expense of our Political leaders.

John Waters will entertain with his biting sharp witticisms over the Christmas Holiday wishing us all a tacky little Christmas with not so subtle adult content reminders of all that holiday fluff we so eagerly anticipate and why we just might as well enjoy it!

Sister?s Christmas Catechism will grace the stage in December with yet another audience participation adventure headed by our favorite Nun. This ever changing presentation is for all of the faithful no matter what denomination!? You need to be ready to don a crown or veil as some lucky audience members will be trudged on stage to become a living nativity scene during the performance! Great fun for all!

You can also enjoy Cuban Salsa dancing on stage, The Venice Baroque Orchestra, and Spanish Harlem Orchestra, The Romantic music of Robert Schumann, Christmas in Ireland by DANU, Flamenco Dance Classes, and so much more throughout the new year!

Well, I hope this has inspired you to visit the most fabulous Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and treat yourself to some of the wonderful confections of theater you deserve!

PFT: Broncos push back against Tebow criticism

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow calls a play against the Buffalo Bills during their pre-season NFL football game in DenverReuters

For the past few weeks, as criticism of quarterback Tim Tebow from beyond the organization grew, the team didn?t say much of anything.? Instead, the new coaching staff?s actions did all the talking, with Tebow sliding from No. 2 to No. 3 on the depth chart.? Coupled with a biting item from ESPN?s Rick Reilly, who has a pipeline to Broncos football czar John Elway, there was an unmistakable sense that the Broncos had begun the process of distancing themselves from the final first-round pick of the two-year Josh McDaniels regime.

In the wake of a report from Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports claiming that, according to ?one highly knowledgeable member of the organization,? Tebow actually would land behind Adam Weber on the four-deep quarterback depth chart, the Broncos are finally pushing back.

Asked about Silver?s report on Wednesday, coach John Fox gave Tebow a boost.

?First of all, I would like to say that nobody in this building that is in the decision-making process ? coach, official, or I don?t know, maybe they heard it from the cook,? Fox said.? ?I?m not sure, but we hold Tim in high regard.? I think he?s got a bright future in this game.? He?s playing maybe the hardest position I know in the NFL there is to play, and maybe in all of sports.? He?s progressing fine.? He?ll get more opportunities in games as we go; those are great opportunities.? Last week, he was cut a little short based on how the game went.? Defensively, we didn?t get them off the field, and by the time he got in, it was a four-minute situation.

?Everybody in this building has high regard for Tim Tebow, and Tim?s doing just fine. There?s no update on where his ranking is at this point by any official.?

So who could be the ?highly knowledgeable member of the organization??

?I don?t think, if you read it correctly, that it said anybody in the organization,? Fox said.? ?It just said a knowledgeable football person ? that could have been a wide range.? Like I said, it could have been the chef; he sees the players every day.?

Meanwhile, Broncos V.P. of Public Relations Jim Saccomano, whose department has done little to counter the take-downs of Tebow, has taken to Twitter to complain indirectly about Silver?s reporting.

?All media, all types and levels, desperate for headlines that will move product,? Saccomano said.? He added that, due to the pressure to generate headlines, ?sometimes the tabloid mentality overtakes objectivity, at expense of some great journalists.?

Saccomano thinks that the work of ?[h]it and run journalists? will ?speed development of team-only media.?? But that isn?t the answer, either.? The fans know that they?ll rarely, if ever, get truly objective assessments of a given team from media bought and paid for by that team.

Besides, the NFL as a whole benefits from intense coverage of the sport, regardless of whether a given story is fair or unfair, biased or unbiased, true or untrue.? As long as folks are talking more and more and more about pro football, more and more and more people will want to watch or attend the games.? That?s why every personnel controversy regarding a given team, while likely bad for the team in question, is good for the league as a whole.

More U.S. Travelers Gearing Up for Fall Trips

With Labor Day just around the corner, it?s time to start thinking about fall travel, especially as it?s one of the most economical ?shoulder season? times of the year to travel. And according to TripAdvisor?s latest fall and Labor Day survey, released today, the number of U.S. travelers planning to take a trip this fall jumped to 86 percent, representing a 12 percent increase over last year?s 74 percent response.

Of the 1,600 respondents with fall travel plans, 56 percent are planning weekend getaways, while 35 percent will vacation for one week. More than two-thirds said that their travel plans for autumn have not been impacted by recent economic news, while 37 percent plan to spend more than they did last year on fall leisure trips and 46 percent intend to spend the same as in 2010.

For Labor Day, 28 percent have travel plans for the long holiday weekend, equal to last year?s survey results. Among those respondents, 60 percent expect to drive, and 34 percent plan to fly. Twenty-six percent will take an outdoors trip, 24 percent will take a city escape, and 24 percent will take a beach trip. Traffic is the worst part of traveling for Labor Day for 40 percent of respondents, while 16 percent cited it being depressing that Labor Day represents the end of summer.

For autumn travel overall, 40 percent are planning a city trip, 28 percent will make cultural trips, and 27 percent will try to extend summer by hitting the beach. Fall foliage viewing was the top ranked fall activity, at 43 percent, followed by wine tasting/visiting a vineyard (29 percent) and attending a state/county fair or fall festival (23 percent).

Which destinations are U.S. travelers planning to visit this fall? New York City, Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago and San Francisco.

Additional fall travel findings:

  • 69 percent said they will stay in a hotel, 30 percent at the home of family or friends and 20 percent intend to stay at a vacation rental (respondents could choose more than one answer)
  • Fewer crowds than summer (23 percent) and climate being more pleasant than during summer (22 percent) are the top two reasons travelers enjoy trips in the fall.
  • 27 percent of travelers are planning to travel to a hurricane susceptible destination.
  • 65 percent of travelers intend to take a domestic leisure trip this fall, while another 23 percent will travel both domestically and internationally, and 11 percent will take international-only trips.
  • 70 percent of travelers will drive to their fall vacation destinations, while 69 percent plan to fly (percentage exceeds 100 due to some respondents taking more than one trip).

2nd body found at CA home where man shot officer (AP)

EL CAJON, Calif. ? Police say a second adult body has been found in the charred debris of a Southern California home where a gunman opened fire, critically wounding a police officer.

El Cajon police spokesman Lt. Mark Coit says the second adult body was found Monday afternoon toward the back of the burned-out home. Coit says it is believed to be the body of 51-year-old Beverly Rakov, the mother-in-law of suspected gunman Kevin Collier. The other body, found Sunday night, is believed to be that of Collier.

Coit says both bodies were burned beyond recognition so forensics tests will be needed for positive identification.

Police say Collier also is suspected of killing his baby daughter.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A gunman is suspected of killing his baby daughter in his truck, then torching his home, in a dramatic series of events that ended with him critically wounding a police officer before perishing in the blaze, police said Monday.

Kevin Collier, 32, texted friends and family on Sunday that he had killed his daughter and mother-in-law, police spokesman Lt. Mark Coit said.

The baby was found inside the truck with a gunshot wound to the head, and authorities were trying to determine whether the girl was Collier's 1-year-old daughter, Rhilee, Colt said.

Authorities believe she was killed before police arrived.

Collier's mother-in-law, 51-year-old Beverly Rakov, remained missing as investigators combed the charred debris of the home in El Cajon, a working-class city east of San Diego.

Heather Gooden, a friend of Rakov, said she received a message early Sunday in which Rakov said her son-in-law had guns and she feared for her life.

Meanwhile, El Cajon Officer Jarred Slocum, 28, remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to his forehead that fractured his skull.

Slocum was responding to a call shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday that a gunman had set a home on fire. When Slocum approached the dwelling, he was shot by someone inside the house, Coit said.

The 4-year Police Department veteran fired before grabbing his neck and falling against a chain link fence. His rookie partner, Tim McFarland, ran to drag him to cover, assisted by two neighbors.

Smoke billowed from the home. Helicopters dumped water overhead to control the blaze as SWAT team members surrounded the property and officials evacuated nearby homes and shut down surrounding roads and freeways, unsure whether the gunman had escaped.

As the flames eased, firefighters moved in to the home, protected by gun-wielding SWAT officers.

They found the body of an adult near the front of the home's interior, the head and shoulders protruding from the burning debris. Police believe it may be that of Collier, but Coit said dental records may be needed to confirm the sex and identity because of the body's condition.

Police believe Collier died in the blaze because authorities had sealed off the area and he was not found.

Coit said Collier's wife managed to escape and was safe. Police were checking on whether there had been any prior domestic disputes reported at the home.

The stench of smoke early Monday still wafted through the neighborhood of lower- to middle-class older homes in the San Diego suburb, as bewildered neighbors stared at the blackened home in disbelief.

Gooden, 41, arrived sobbing at the police tape cordoning off the homes. She said she has known the family for 30 years and never heard of any problems with violence.

Gooden said Rakov owned the home, and Rakov's daughter, Alyssa, and her husband and baby daughter had moved in with Rakov after a job opportunity for Collier in New York fell through in December. She said she heard the couple had filed for divorce last week.

Gooden said she texted Rakov shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday to see if she could pick up her daughter's furniture that Rakov was storing for her.

Rakov texted back that she couldn't do it because her son-in-law had taken her grandchild and police were at her home.

Then she wrote a chilling final message: "I have never been so scared in my life, Heather. He has guns. He's gonna shoot my daughter. (H)e has lost his (expletive) mind."

Gooden sent repeated texts to Rakov throughout the day Sunday but has gotten no replies.

How To Avoid Mental Pain Through Meditation ? drug addict, yogasutra

Conquistador: Conquistador (; ; ; "conqueror") refers to the Spanish and Portuguese soldiers, explorers, and adventurers who brought much of the Americas under the control of Spain and Portugal in the 15th to 16th centuries, following Europe's discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Most people are afflicted with mental pain of one kind or other. Let us see why it occurs and how to avoid mental pain through meditation.

According to the Patanjali?s Yogasutra, people are afflicted with five types pf pain. These are: false knowledge (avidya), egoism (asmita), attachment (raga), hatred (dvesha) and fear of death (abhinivesh).

  1. False knowledge - This type of pain is related to those things that don?t exist. No one has ever seen gods and goddesses, hell and heaven or ghosts and angels. Still religions, communities and sects are created in the name of gods and goddesses. Religious leaders instigate fighting with other communities in order to protect their own religious beliefs and practices. They say that those who will lay down their lives for God will enter into heaven and those who have no faith?will enter into hell. At present we see and suffer by the acts of religious terrorists and fundamentalists. Countries have been divided, millions have been killed for such believes and practices.
  2. Egoism - This is developed when one has power or wealth. The problem with all is that nobody wants suppression or slavery but everybody tries to suppress others. But one should think that these are not real and short lived. We have seen in history how dictators and conquerors have been destroyed. In the beginning wealth and power seem good but in the end both suppressor and suppressed suffer immensely.
  3. Attachment ? In the beginning, attachment with either living beings or material things gives pleasure and joy. However the death of someone close to you or loosing a material thing leads to depression and sorrow. Similarly, drug addiction is very painful. Not only a drug?addict suffers but the whole family suffers.
  4. Hatred - It is painful from the beginning. Body and mind becomes weak and ill for the spread of poison of hatred inside. People with hatred often lose sleep. It is wise to give up hatred as early as possible.
  5. Fear of death - It is the most dreadful type of pain of all. Even a wise man can?t tolerate this.?Whatever may be the reason, either due to?disease or old age or enemy, such fear is baseless and can be avoided.

The solution is meditation. All these mental pains or sufferings may be avoided through meditation. Meditation is one of the limbs of Yoga. Patanjali has described the aim of yoga as, "The seer rests in his true self (svarup)." Seer means one who practices yoga. So when seer reaches his goal, he rests in his true self. Hence this is also the aim of meditation. In meditation one should meditate upon oneself and upon no other thing, not even God. Self or soul is the only reality in the whole universe. When self is realized, one realizes the reality and gains true knowledge. One looses egoism of power and wealth. One develops detachment with all worldly beings and things. So one hates none. One overcomes fear of death for death comes under one?s control. One leaves the world whenever one desires and comes to the world when one desires to do so.

Only through meditation can you overcome all worldly pain and sorrow.

N. Korea leader in Russia for aid, nuke talks

Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Il said he was pleased to see Russia's development, after being warmly welcomed by Russian officials at the start of a rare trip to the Cold War era ally, North Korean state media reported Sunday.

Kim crossed into Russia on his armored train Saturday at the invitation of President Dmitry Medvedev, with the two leaders reportedly planning a summit aimed at discussing the restart of nuclear disarmament talks and the construction of a pipeline that would stream Russian natural gas to North and South Korea.

Kim's train stopped in the Russian border city of Khasan on Saturday morning before moving on to its next destination, the official Korean Central News Agency reported from Pyongyang. KCNA and the Kremlin had said earlier that Kim would visit Russia's Far East region and Siberia.

At Khasan's railway station, Kim was warmly greeted by senior Russian officials, including Viktor Ishayev, presidential envoy to the Far East Region of the Russian Federation, KCNA said.

The Russian officials said Kim's trip would "mark a historic occasion" in moving cooperative bilateral ties to a "fresher and higher stage," KCNA said. Kim replied he was "very pleased" to see the achievement made by the Russian people and thanked Russian officials and people for warmly welcoming him, it said.

After leaving Khasan, Kim's train continued to travel west, stopping briefly at the Khabarovsk railway station before arriving in Amur Region in the Far East on Sunday morning, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, citing unidentified diplomatic sources. In Amur, Kim was to tour a large-scale hydroelectric power plant, it said.

Kim's visit to Russia ? his first since 2002 ? comes amid signs that Pyongyang is increasing efforts to secure aid and restart stalled six-nation disarmament negotiations aimed at ending its nuclear weapons program in return for aid.

Last month, a senior North Korean diplomat visited New York to discuss ways to resume the nuclear talks last held in December 2008. Earlier, the nuclear envoys of North and South Korea met in Indonesia and agreed to work toward the resumption of the talks, which involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan.

Russia and North Korea both announced Friday that Moscow will provide food assistance, including some 50,000 tons of wheat, to Pyongyang. North Korea might face another food crisis this year due to heavy rains.

"The key reasons for Kim's Russian visit are to discuss receiving food aid and improving economic cooperation between the two" countries, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

North Korea said earlier this week that Medvedev sent a letter calling for greater energy cooperation among Russia and the two Koreas, saying it would enhance regional security. That came after Russia's foreign minister said Moscow was in talks with Pyongyang and Seoul separately on putting gas pipes through the Korean peninsula.

The pipeline construction is a chance "to include North Korea in a large international project that will give a new stimulus to the North Korean regime," said Fyodor Lukyanov, the editor of Russia in Global Affairs magazine.

"This is both gas and the transit money for gas" to South Korea, he told The Associated Press.

The 69-year-old Kim traveled to China in May in a trip seen by many as an attempt to secure aid, investment and support for a transfer of power to his youngest son. It was Kim's third visit to his country's closest ally in just over a year.

Seoul expert Yang said that Kim is now seeking Russia's support for the father-to-son power transfer.

Russian state news channel Rossiya 24 reported that Medvedev will meet Kim in Ulan Ude, the capital of Buryatia, a Buddhist province near Lake Baikal. Kim would have to travel about 1,860 miles (3,000 kilometers) on the Trans-Siberian Railway along the borders with China and Mongolia to reach Ulan Ude from Khasan.

Yonhap said the summit will take place Tuesday at an army base in Ulan Ude.

The Kremlin press service said that details of Kim's visit were still being worked out with the North Korean side.

Kim last visited Russia in 2002, a four-day trip limited to the Far East. A year earlier, however, he made a 24-day train trek across the country.

Russia and North Korea maintain cordial ties, though they are not as close as they were in Soviet times, when Moscow provided significant aid and support to Pyongyang.

Syrian forces kill more; execute Assad, crowd chants

Syrian forces killed dozens of protesters on Friday despite assurances by President Bashar al-Assad that a crackdown was over, and thousands of people rallied across the Arab nation with renewed vigor demanding political freedoms.

Activists said at least 34 people, including four children, were shot dead by Assad's forces in the southern province of Deraa, where the uprising against Assad erupted in March, the city of Homs, 165 km (100 miles) north of Damascus, suburbs of the capital and in the ancient desert city of Palmyra.

"Bye-bye Bashar. See you in The Hague," chanted protesters in Homs, referring to the Dutch-based international war crimes tribunal. They also shook shoes in the air in a gesture of contempt.

"We want revenge against Maher and Bashar," shouted others, referring to the Syrian leader and his powerful brother -- a military commander accused by diplomats and residents of attacking cities and cracking down on pro-democracy protests.

Encouraged by growing global pressure on Assad, the Syrian opposition in exile said it would set up a National Council in Turkey on Sunday to support the uprising and help fill any power vacuum should the protests succeed in ousting Assad.

Video: Syria continues violent crackdown on protesters (on this page)

Similar initiatives in the past have failed to produce a robust umbrella group to unite the opposition, fragmented by 41 years of Assad's harsh rule.

Assad, from the minority Alawite sect in the mostly Sunni Muslim nation, told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this week that military and police operations had stopped. But activists say his forces are still shooting at protesters.

The violent repression prompted coordinated calls from the United States and European Union on Thursday for Assad to step down and Washington imposed sweeping new sanctions on Syria, which borders Israel, Lebanon and Iraq and is an ally of Iran.

On Friday, European Union states agreed to expand the number of Syrian officials and institutions targeted by EU sanctions and laid out plans for a possible oil embargo. Syria exports over a third of its 385,000 barrels per day output to Europe.

Story: Obama tells Syria's Assad to quit; condemns him for 'slaughtering his own people'

Activists said five people were killed and 15 wounded in the ancient desert city of Palmyra, when Assad's forces opened fire during a demonstration.

"The people want the execution of the president," shouted a crowd in the northern Idlib province. Some carried banners with slogans proclaiming "Signs of Victory".

Local activist Abdallah Aba Zaid said 18 people were killed in Deraa province, including eight in the town of Ghabaghab, five in Hirak, four in Inkhil and one in Nawa. Dozens of people were wounded, he said.

State television blamed the deaths in Ghabaghab on gunmen who attacked a police post, killing a policeman and a civilian and wounding two. It said two members of the security forces and one gunman were killed in a clash in Harasta, near Damascus.

Syria has expelled most independent media since the unrest began, making it difficult to verify events on the ground. The United Nations says 2,000 civilians have been killed. Authorities blame "armed terrorist groups" and Islamists for the bloodshed and say 500 soldiers and police have been killed.

Interactive: Young and restless: Demographics fuel Mideast protests (on this page)

Snipers on roof
Internet footage of Friday's protests suggested that, although widespread, they were smaller than at their peak in July, before Assad sent tanks and troops into several cities.

But activists say protests have spread to more cities and become more frequent despite assaults that have intensified since the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

A doctor in Zabadani, 30 km (20 miles) northeast of Damascus, said army vehicles were in the town and snipers were on rooftops to prevent crowds marching.

Protesters from the Sunni majority resent the power and wealth amassed by some Alawites, who adhere to an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and the near monopoly of the sect on the security apparatus. They want Assad to quit, the dismantling of the police state and a transition to democracy.

President Barack Obama froze Syrian state assets in the United States, banned U.S. citizens from operating or investing in Syria and prohibited U.S. imports of Syrian oil products.

Adding to international pressure, U.N. investigators said Assad's forces had committed violations that may amount to crimes against humanity. The United Nations plans to send a team to Syria on Saturday to assess the humanitarian situation.

The United States, Britain and European allies say they will draft a U.N. Security Council sanctions resolution on Syria.

Despite the dramatic sharpening of Western rhetoric, there is no threat of Western military action like that against Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, meaning Assad's conflict with his opponents seems likely to grind on in the streets.

Tornadoes, hurricanes, storms and garage doors ? Flickrz Article ...

Often being the largest opening on most homes, the
garage door is usually the most vulnerable to failure under
high wind pressure such as hurricanes, tornadoes and storms
in general. The pressure of the wind can destroy the garage
doors during a storm that allows water and wind to enter
the house. This can cause significant damage to furniture,
electronic equipment, the contents in general as well as the
houses structure. The garage door is often overlooked
when strengthening the structure against high winds.

Massive building failures and strong winds have convinced
storm-prone communities that residents must be prepared
to employ active or passive reinforcement systems for their
garage doors. An active system is that specific type of
reinforcement that must be installed before a high-wind
event while passive systems are built into the product and
dont need any activation from the owner. For the home
owner in hurricane-prone areas there are only two real
options: either a new garage door with a built in passive
reinforcement system or a garage door reinforcement kit.

The option of totally replacing the garage door is usually
an expensive procedure so a garage door reinforcement kit
would be a good choice if your budget for remodeling your
garage is low. Although is rather expensive, a new garage
door offers a more secure and safe option in front of a high
wind.

If youd rather choose the cheapest option, that is to
reinforce your garage door you can protect your home in
one of the following ways: first of all install pressure or
impact resistant devices, such as shutters, panels, accordion
fold shutters on the garage doors or install pressure/impact
resistant garage doors that do not require shutters. If your
existing door is impact resistant but it is not wind pressure
rated, install an approved garage door bracing system to
increase the wind pressure resistance. A pressure/impact
resistant rating ensures that the device meets the wind pressure
and debris impact requirements of the Southern Building
Code Congress International standards or the July 1988
wind pressure and debris impact requirements of the
American Society of Civil Engineers adopted in September
1994.

When adding a garage door bracing first ensure that there is
enough and relevant documentation that the product has
been tested at a certified testing laboratory. The product
should be designed to withstand both positive and negative
wind pressure. You should contact a local garage door
supplier of approved garage door bracing systems to assist
you in the selection of the necessary system for your needs.

A Few Inconveniences Of Home Remodeling | Home Improvement

When I was in high school, my parents decided to remodel our kitchen and living room. It was about time for the change. Our house was built in the 1950?s and the kitchen was pretty retro. We were in desperate need for an upgrade. Once all the plans were made, the blueprints approved, and the contract written, the work finally began. We were basically banished to our basement for 4 months as they tore apart and rebuilt much of the upstairs. We had only a mini fridge in the laundry room in our basement. All of our hot meals were cooked in a crock pot. It was a strange time in my life, removed from normal living to a less fulfilling, more restrictive style. I think I have tried to block it out of my memory.

Home remodeling, from Atlanta to Seattle, can be a nightmare. Of course, you expect to be kicked out of the area that is being remodeled and restricted to maybe only a small portion of your home, if not to a completely different living accommodation all together. But there will be noise, dust, and clutter as well. Your beautiful lawn may be sacrificed for the storage of waste disposal bins or building equipment. There will be strange men romping through your house with heavy boots, music playing, and loud voices. For however long it takes for the project to be completed, you probably will not really desire to be in your home.

That brings us to another inconvenience. The phrase however long it takes has a whole new meaning when it comes to home remodeling. In your written contract, there will be a finish date. You can expect that date to get pushed back at least two or three times. Your builders will run in to unforeseen problems in the structure of your house. Some vital material or hardware will not be ordered in time, and thus put the finish date behind schedule. Maybe your workers are just not as productive as they could be, and so they simply do not get the job done in a timely way. This, of course, adds to the frustration of the fact that they have already taken over and made a mess of your house.

Though I experienced these, and other, drawbacks to our own home remodeling experience, the final product was well worth the wait. Home remodeling, Atlanta to Seattle, is always a hassle, but more often than not, the end product will justify the pain.

Signs are provided in a variety of methods, including by Internet and email, by pc software interface, and also by mobile phone. Investors pay registration fees for these products and services, daily, weekly, month-to-month, or even yearly. Rates range from $25 monthly on up to $250+.
