A Few Inconveniences Of Home Remodeling | Home Improvement

When I was in high school, my parents decided to remodel our kitchen and living room. It was about time for the change. Our house was built in the 1950?s and the kitchen was pretty retro. We were in desperate need for an upgrade. Once all the plans were made, the blueprints approved, and the contract written, the work finally began. We were basically banished to our basement for 4 months as they tore apart and rebuilt much of the upstairs. We had only a mini fridge in the laundry room in our basement. All of our hot meals were cooked in a crock pot. It was a strange time in my life, removed from normal living to a less fulfilling, more restrictive style. I think I have tried to block it out of my memory.

Home remodeling, from Atlanta to Seattle, can be a nightmare. Of course, you expect to be kicked out of the area that is being remodeled and restricted to maybe only a small portion of your home, if not to a completely different living accommodation all together. But there will be noise, dust, and clutter as well. Your beautiful lawn may be sacrificed for the storage of waste disposal bins or building equipment. There will be strange men romping through your house with heavy boots, music playing, and loud voices. For however long it takes for the project to be completed, you probably will not really desire to be in your home.

That brings us to another inconvenience. The phrase however long it takes has a whole new meaning when it comes to home remodeling. In your written contract, there will be a finish date. You can expect that date to get pushed back at least two or three times. Your builders will run in to unforeseen problems in the structure of your house. Some vital material or hardware will not be ordered in time, and thus put the finish date behind schedule. Maybe your workers are just not as productive as they could be, and so they simply do not get the job done in a timely way. This, of course, adds to the frustration of the fact that they have already taken over and made a mess of your house.

Though I experienced these, and other, drawbacks to our own home remodeling experience, the final product was well worth the wait. Home remodeling, Atlanta to Seattle, is always a hassle, but more often than not, the end product will justify the pain.
